i just had a miscarriage a week ago and i am wanting to try again soon. i was taking 1 a day womens vitamin for 7 months before getting preg but i dont know if there is enough folic acid in those pills. the doc said thats what i should take before hand and when i got preg i took a prenatal called tantrum ( i think?) does anyone know the recommended dosage of folic acid you need before you become preg and during pregnancy??

You should take at least 4-5 mg every day. Usually multivitamins don't have enough Folic Acid in them. I am taking multivitamins which have 1 mg Folic acid + extra Folic Acid tablets of 5 mg.

I am taking a prenatal and an extra folic acid and told my doctor about it. I took both of those for 2 mths before conception and was wondering if I should drop my dose, but my doctor said I could, but that you can't take too much folic acid because your body just eliminates what it doesn't need.

While you are pregnant or TTCing you only need 800mcg of folic acid. However if you carry the MTHFR mutation or have a familial history of neural tube defects such as spina bifida or anacephaly then you need to increase it to 4-5mg (4000-5000mcg). But like Bryandi said extra folic acid if you don't need it is not harmful, just make sure you are getting at least the minimum of 800mcg.
