I just got my BFP but am very nervous. My dh and I have been ttc for 15 months now. I got pregnant twice in the beginning which both ended in m/c. I was diagnosed

sorry the rest go cut off. My first m/c was at 8 weeks and my second was at 9 weeks. I was diagnosed with MTHFR after the second. My RE said it probably had nothing to do with my losses but put my on baby aspirin and folic acid anyways. We have had the whole fertility work up done and everything else came back normal. I am one of those with unexplained infertility. It took us about 6 months to get pregnant this time and I am very nervous that it will end in m/c also. Has anyone had a successful pregnancy after 2 m/c? Please help!!!!

Hi nicole, I also have mthfr and have had previous losses but am now pregnant again and things seem to be going well (never got past 6-8 weeks before and now baby is 17 weeks!)...you should also be taking vitamins B6 and B12 as they help in the metabolization of the folic acid. If you are homozygous for the MTHFR or compound heterozygous you should look into blood thinner shots with your doctor. I am only heterozygous, but I have a very proactive doctor and he put me on 40mg daily Lovenox injections this pregnancy and I'm glad he did as a "just in case"....good luck to you and I soo hope this is the one for you!

I am on a prenatal that has 1mg of folic acid, 75mg b-6, 12 mcg b-12. is that enough? I am homozygous 677t but my homocysteine levels are normal so my RE said that heparin is not necessary. I haven't had my homocysteine levels checked for a few months. does that level vary and should I have it checked again now that I am pregnant? My RE said he will also put me on progesterone for the first part of my pregnancy.

nicole, it's great that your doctor is also going to do the progesterone (my dr. prescribed prometrium and I'd try to get that if you can as it acts like the real progesterone in our bodies). As for the folic I was put on 5mg daily, so no, I don't think you are taking enough. I am actually really surprised that you are homozygous and they don't have you on blood thinners as well. I understand the homocysteine levels thing, but at this point none of the dr's seem to know enough about MTHFR to really know how it works! It seems from reading on this board (there is an excellent thread that has been going for like 3 years called "MTHFR?") that there are TONS of women with multiple losses and they have normal homocysteine readings. Especially C677T is supposedly more problematic and you have a double whammy of it. My dr. said Lovenox is safer than heparin and you do it once per day. He didn't feel that I really really needed it, but explained that the risks were very low and I figured that I'd rather try than not try because I didn't want another loss (I'd had 6). If your doctor won't budge and you are ok with it, then great! If it bothers you, I'd try finding someone else who would work with you. I feel I was very blessed with my doctor as I know my regular OB would NEVER have put me on the shots and progesterone (300mg daily). Oh, and on the folic, I was just prescribed 1mg tablets and my dr. instructed me to take 5 per day. I don't have the combo folic/Bvits pills so I take the B vitamins separately. If you can't get a new script for the folic, just buy it at the store and take like 4 800mcg pills (over the counter). Hope I haven't overwhelmed you, just hoping to help.

nicole --- congrats on the pregnancy! ---- i took extra folic acid too - at the drugstore you can get it with the vitamins --- and you can take up to 5mg's a day i believe -- i am still on an additional 2mg's plus the mg in my prenatals. and as stef mentioned - i'd ask about the blood thinnners. (have they atleast got you taking a baby asprin till 12 weeks???) --- good luck with this pregnancy - and congrats again!

Oh, nicole I forgot to mention I take 100mg B6 and I think 50mcg of B12 in addition to everything else.

Thank you so much for your response. I will probably be seeing my dr. tomorrow so I will find out for sure what all he plans on doing. thanks again

Hi, nicole26 how was your doctor appointment?

nicole26 - February 2

I called my Dr. and they just checked my hcg level on monday and again on wednesday. monday it was 90 and went up to 278 by wednesday which they said was really good. Its supposed to double every 2 days and my tripled. I wasn't sure if I was taking enough folic acid and he said for me to take 2 mg as to the 1 mg I was taking, baby aspirin and progesterone but he didn''t mention anything about b-6 or B-12. I also thought the vitamin I was one was a prenatal with everything in it plus a little extra folic acid and b vits, but I dont think it is. It was prescribed to me by a different dr than the one I see now. By what I've been reading on here, I should be taking more like 4 mg of folic acid. Right now I am taking a prenatal and then enough supplements to make 4 mg folic acid, 50 mg B6, and 1 mg B12. Does that sound about right? I'm just really nervous about this pregnancy. I haven't made it past 9 weeks with the last 2 and I want to do everything I can to make this one last. I go in on the 12th for an ultrasound and Dr. appointment so maybe I will find out more then. Even if my ultrasound comes back good I am going to find it very hard to relax because my m/c always happen after hearing a heartbeat. I guess its just a wait and see.

Great news!!! I take 5 mg of folic daily (dr. told me to) and 100mg B6 and like 500mcg of B12 (i'm not sure on that, but i know it is a lot more than what is in regular prenatals). I was also told to take the B vitamins as they help with the folic metabolization. I just buy the B vits at the drugstore and there is NO harm in taking them so you might as well even if the dr. didn't tell you to. I swear if I listened to my doctors I'd still not be pregnant. I really wish your doc would put you on lovenox though being homozygous. Some are just more conservative than others I suppose. I want you to be successful so badly because I know and understand what you've been through. Best of luck to you!!!

stefkay - February 2

duh, sorry! I see you said you are taking 4 mg and 50mg B6, etc. already. I think that sounds fine! I'm probably doing overkill, but don't want to stop what I'm doing as SOMETHING must be working, lol :)

nicole26 - February 2

I wish he would put on lovenox also but he says that since my homoscysteine levels are normal then the MTHFR is not the cause of my m/c. Do you know if homocysteine levels can change once becoming pregnant? I was wondering if I should insist on him checking them again. They haven't been checked since October. I also had a polyp removed in July but he is not convinced that it caused my m/c either. I wish I had some explanation as to what was wrong. How were you able to relax for this pregnancy and not think that something was always wrong.

stefkay - February 2

Oh my, I'm STILL not relaxed, lol :) Seriously the first 12 weeks I had several near panic attacks (and at least one or two for sure). I was so afraid my anxiety was going to cause me to m/c too which made it all worse. I am not sure on the homocysteine levels. Mine were always normal too, but I just had a dr. who said that it was low risk so he left it up to me about whether I wanted to do the shots or not. I asked if it could cause complications later in the pregnancy and he said most likely not (not with lovenox). I had an earlier doctor who said the same thing about the MTHFR. I am just paranoid and feel that they don't know everything there is to know about it so I'm kind of one of those people who figure throwing everything at a problem will allow at least something to stick, right? lol....if it were only that easy! I know someone on these threads who had a polyp removed and her dr thought it COULD be the cause of her losses so right there shows how different docs think. No two are the same, so you may even want to look into someone else? I know it is hard though with being pregnant so just take all the vitamins and the baby aspirin. Oh, an Omega 3 fish oil supplement is something else too that is strongly suggested. I got a Purified fish oil supplement (no toxins, mercury, etc.) and it has just DHA and EPA in it. It says right on the label. You don't want any other stuff in it, but it is wonderful and recommended for the baby's growth (brain, circulation, etc.) ALSO, and added benefit is it helps to thin the blood a bit more too. Not enough to be drastic, but could help with the baby aspirin if your doc won't do the shots.

nicole26 - February 3

Thank you so much for your help. I will check into the Omega 3 fish oil. Can you get that at any drug store? I will only be seeing my RE until about 8 wks and then he will refer me to a high risk Dr. I have heard a lot about the RE that I am seeing now being really good and knowing what he's doing. (I work at the same hospital he does). So I'm sure whatever he is telling me is correct I just get paronoid...lol. I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to prevent a m/c again. My only concern is that when he refers me to high risk that that Dr might say I should have been on the lovenox all this time and it may be too late being that I always m/c early. Well I'm just trying to hang in there for another wk until I have an appointment. Hopefully I'll know more then. Thanks again
