My best friend had a miscarriage four mths ago and is pregnant again. She is very worried because she has been taking xanex since then and is worried it may have caused harm to the baby. Does anyone know how to calm her fears?

Hi April, do you know if she is prescribed the xanax by her doctor or not? If she is, I'm a__suming her doctor knows is pregnant (and should know her history--the last pregnancy and miscarriage). If that's the case, then it should be ok, but I'm not a dr. so I don't know what all is safe to take in pregnancy and what isnt. From my understanding most drugs are to be avoided in pregnancy unless they absolutely have to be taken (the dr. weighs the risk to the baby versus the risk to the mother if it's not taken). If it were me, I'd rather not take it until I saw my doctor and asked her about it, then take it from there. I wouldn't want to risk anything.

"FDA pregnancy category D. Xanax can cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not use Xanax without your doctor's consent if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. Use an effective form of birth control while you are using this medication. Xanax can pa__s into b___st milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are b___st-feeding a baby. " From drugs dot com

So if I were you I'd have her call her doc today and find out the real risks, and what she can switch to that is safer. I hope that helps.

There is information here regarding FDA pregnancy categories, and a list of some of the more dangerous things to avoid while pg. h t t p (2 forward slashes, no w's) : depts.washington.edu /druginfo/Formulary/Pregnancy . pdf (you'll have to take the spaces out.)

Thanks sososleepy!! You go girl...I was trying to think of that pregnancy category thing and had a brainfart this morning. I think A is the least harmful and gets worse as it goes B, C, D and then I think it is X? Category D is something you definitely wouldn't want to take.
