I M Really Confused

I had unprotected s_x last week and was supposed to start my period soon. Friends told me they were worried because that is supposed to be a time when a woman is very fertile. I started my period last night and it's much different from my usual period. It's a very mucus-y red and light. My usually period (since I was TWELVE) has always been heavy, dark red, and thick. Should I be worried?

No, don't worry yet - just wait and see. Periods sometimes just start out that way. The most fertile time is about 14 days before your period is due. If your period stops really early, or you only spot and it never goes really red, I'd test to be sure. But my hunch is, you're going to fine - and your period is just starting out funny.

Okay, so my period completely stopped this morning. My normal period would be really heavy today. I'm getting a little worried. When does everyone suggest I take a test? ._.

If you had s_x last week and already started your period it is doubtful that was during ovulation. Depending though when last week and what your cycle days are.

My sister and I have our periods around the same time, and now I'm learning my sister hasn't even started hers. I remember my period being middle of last month. I don't keep track of my periods, and I don't keep track of ovulation, but this is weird. I've been having heavy, seven day periods since I was a kid, and now my period has pretty much stopped.

Some women will get implantation bleeding at the time that a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. That would happen about 7 to 10 days after ovulation normally, although it can vary more than that. Implantation bleeding is usually less blood, sometimes lighter in color, maybe pink, or brownish, and sometimes tinged with mucus. Does this sound like what you had? If so, that could indicate that you got pregnant, but also there are sometimes other factors that affect womens cycles (stress, strenuous exercise, cysts, travel, etc). So the thing to do would be to keep watching and be careful what you do, just in case (watch out for drugs, alcohol, etc.). If you don't get your period at the scheduled time, wait a few days and then you could try taking a HPT (Home Pregnancy Test).

I got really bad cramps today during work. When I went to check if my period had started up again, I found that there was only spotting on my tampon. My normal period last seven days. It's always a thick, dark red, and very heavy (I usually have to change my tampon every two to three hours) This period was very a light red with a hint of brown, very light and seems to be pretty mucus-y. I also only change my tampons when I need to go to the bathroom, and yesterday I didn't even have to wear one because it was extremely light. Today, I've changed my tampon once in 10 hours (changed it five hours ago) and there was only spotting. I haven't checked since. I only changed it because I felt like I needed to check, not because it felt bloody. At what point from conception (I have only had s_x once in this entire period -- so I know the exact date and time) would you consider I take a home pregnancy test?

Hannah, Most early pregancy tests (like early first response) can detect the pregnancy hormone 7-10 days past conception. I would try to test if it's been ten days (since you know the day). If it is negative, wait a few more days and test again. If you need someone to talk to, let me know.

I am actually experiencing the same things as you described. I have been reading a lot about this and the answers are all over the place. Did you ever take a test to find out if you are pregnant ?

Hannah - August 17

On the advice of my friends, I did end up taking a pregnancy test. My friend grabbed the cheapest test she could find and the test came out negative. Just incase, I called the hotline and they told me I probably tested too soon due to the fact I wasn't sure when my last regular period was. When I read reviews of the test, apparently it measures more hCG than I'd have at this stage, so I'm either going to get an early pregnancy test this weekend or wait for next weekend to take the second test from the one we already bought.
