Amniotic Fluid Question Please Help Me

I am currently 17 weeks pregnant and have just been for a amnio test, when I got there they did a scan and the doctor told me that I had a low level of amniotic fluid and that they wouldn't be able to do the amnio so did a CVS instead. Now I am worried sick from the news that I have low level fluid due to researching it on the internet and seeing that it generally ends in miscarriage in the the 2nd trimester, I'm just wondering if anyone has has experienced this and they can a least give me a bit of hope.

Jenz i've never heard of this but i do hope it all turns out well for you! Why were they doing an amnio if you don't mind me asking?

Jenz - November 13

Hi Rainbowbrite the reason we decided to have the amnio was down to my age really, I'm 36 and the risk of downs rose considerably it was a hard decision to make, but when we went for the scan today and it was shown low aniotic fluid then the next step would have been a CVS as a symtom of downs and other featal irregulaties can be low amniotic fluid. They have told me I should have the results tomorrow/Thursday of the CVS and if that is negative then I have to wait 2 weeks for another scan, by that time I think I will have driven myself mad with worry.

Yah i can see why you'd be so worried! HOWEVER- Maybe you need to really just call and talk to your doctor? I hope you find someone who can offer you more advice as i have never heard of this but i think your doctor will be the best one to talk to about this! And i'm one that loves reading on the internet but upon doing that it has also done more harm than good for me to read it!

I know sometimes the internet is a dangerous thing as its very often got all the negative infomation, and when you are looking for something to make you feel better its depressing. I did speak to the doctor and to be fair she just said that she couldn't give me anymore information than she did, she said that I could be fine in a couple of weeks, then again it might be worse case senario, she did check that there were kidneys and the heart beat was good and also the babys bladder was working so that did give me some peace of mind, its just a waiting game I think.

JENZ - well i was one of those people that it happened to in February and at 14 1/2 weeks we had no choice but to terminate our pregnancy there was little to no amniotic fluid we went in for our routine NT scan and they couldnt do the scan we got a 2nd and 3rd opinion in our case it was consistent with the baby more than likely not developing kidneys when the baby gets to the 13th week of pregnancy all the major organs start to form and in our case more than like it didnt happen it was also called "potters syndrome" the chances of it recurring is slim to none we are currently 24 weeks pregnant from our 2nd IVF and no problems whatsosever. Did they tell you how low the fluid is? I just read you had the major organs thats a great thing. I hope things work out well for you I am sure you have already researched this its called oligohydramnios.

Hi Robyn they didn't tell me how low the fluid was, but I am at the moment waiting for the phone to ring for the results on the CVS, and if the results are good I am going to ask how low the fluid is, after researching on the internet I realise that is pretty important information to have

ROBYN - November 14

JENZ - yes its important to have the levels but how did your doctor react to the low fluid did he say hes not concerned, or we will see what happens at the next u/s? My 1st perinatologist we saw was a complete a-hole he basically came in less than 5 min said i am sorry theres low to no fluid the babys heartbeat is great and still going strong we will see you in 2 weeks we were devasted i said i cannot wait 2 weeks he said OK we will see you in a week. We walked out of there and never returne. We immediately got a 2nd opinion from a phenomenal perinatologist who spent an hour with us going over every single step of the u/s and every part of the baby he said the baby had developed normally on the outside but its a complete fluke to lose the fluid and he said that he would give another week or so but it really wasnt going to change our results. We gave it the week and he was right it didnt change for us. I wanted answers immediately i hope you get your answers too. I hope everything works out great for you. I asked about doing IV and adding the fluid back he said in the 2nd tri its just not good if we had been in the 3rd tri they could do that. Please update when you can.

Well I had the results back from the CVS yesterday and they were really positive everything was fine with the baby it had the normal 46 chromosones, I asked what levels my fluid was at and they told me they didn't take any measurements that would be done at the next scan just that I was showing low levels. I suppose all I can do is sit back and wait now and do as they say unti the 30th which seems so far away, its like a time bomb ticking away all I do is keep searching the internet for some peace of mind and unfortunately it seems to have the opposite effect,

ROBYN - November 15

JENZ - i dont think your situation is as bad as mine was in Feb. One thing i dont understand is why they didnt take measurements?? Wouldnt it make sense to compare that to the next u/s in a few weeks? I dont think your situation is as grim as you think it might be It seem like they dont seem to be that concerned about your situation. More like a wait and see approach. Yeah the internet as we know is a dangerous thing trust me i found the same research as you and my husband works for the largest neonatology corporation in the US and he contacted baby doctors all over the US when we had our problem in Feb and they all told us the same thing for us there was no hope. But i dont think you are gonna have the same outcome.

ROBYN - November 15

OH please keep me posted. Did you notice any leaking or anything that might give you an indication ? When i had my loss of fluid when i think back it was a saturday and in the middle of night i felt like i peed in the bed i woke up and was like ok whats this and i know idea then it was the fluid. I got 2 very small leaks the same day a few hours apart so that make me believe it was that night when i had the loss of fluid. We happened to have an appt that monday for the 1st NT scan so thats when we found out.

ROBYN - November 15

sorry for all the typos i really do know how to write it looks like i am skipping words LOL

Hi Robyn I thought it strange that they didn't measure the amniotic fluid, as they were obviously concerned enough not to do the amnios due to the low levels. I haven't lost any fluid, and the doctor told me that I would definately have noticed the amount I had lost, which again made me worry. But I have just come back from Mexico where I had a severe stomach bug where I could not keep anything down me, I've really only just got over to it and I'm clinging to the hope that it was more down to dehydration, but again they wouldn't confirm whether this could be a cause or not.

ROBYN - November 15

Jenz - how frustrating did you see an OB or a perinatologist. I am thinking you should really really really as you see i am stressing that you really need to seek another opinion. If you were in your 3rd trimester its not as dangerous because they can pretty much save the pregnancy but while we are in the 2nd trimester its very difficult to do anything with low amniotic fluid. Also it was explained that the baby would be fine for several months in utero it would show no abnormalities (i.e. facial abnormalities) but once the baby gets bigger and has no room to move the face can get "smushed" because theres no fluid for the baby to move around in. They also told me that the baby could live inside the womb but would die immediately at birth because the baby depends on the fluid for survival inside it needs to drink the fluid to process it thru the kidneys etc.. Its a whole process that i didnt even know about till this had happened to us. I remember that they told me to drink tons and tons of water till our next appt i never stopped drinking that water with hopes it would help. I hate seeing you or anyone go thru this because you are really left in limbo.

Jenz - November 16

I only saw the OB, I rang the hospital up today to see if they could get me in any earlier as the sitting around waiting is sending me crazy, but they told me that the reason for not getting me in any sooner was down to giving me time to rehydrate and showing improvement otherwise It woud only upset me if I came back and showed no improvement. The main concern I have at the moment is that like you just said the room it allows the baby the grow is obviously this is a crucuial time in its growth but I have to put myself in their hands that they are doing the right thing for me and my baby, thanks for all your help and advice.

ROBYN - November 16

JENZ - are you from the US or out of the country? I understand waiting a week for another u/s but i wouldnt wait another 2 weeks its just too long. When was your 1st u/s? Was it before this appt? See we did IVF so i am constantly monitored with an u/s so i usually dont have long waits in between u/s and besides the IVF once we lost the last pregnancy my OB and perinatologist anytime i want an u/s if i am the least bit concerned they will do one to ease my mind. My last u/s was 1 1/2 weeks ago it was to do measurements on the baby etc. I understand there theory about not upsetting you and trying to see if there is improvement i just dont think they should wait that long maybe convince them that you will wait only the week. And have they given any advice if the fluid is still low 2 weeks from now?

Jenz - November 16

Im from the Uk, I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks, and then another at 11, this was my third at 17 weeks for the amnio testing. The first two ultrasounds everything was fine no problems in fact if it hadn't been for me wanting an amnio I wouldn't have had a scan unitl 20 weeks. They have told me nothing about what they will do if the fluid is still low, but after researching it I know that there is little/no hope if the fluid is still low. I did try to bring the ultrasound forward when I rang the midwife this morning but they said they couldn't and it would be better for me to wait. All I can think though is if it is bad news then the futher the pregnancy goes along tjhe harder it will be on us both to terminate, I'm trying not to think that way but there's every chance that could be the outcome.
