Are Self Tanners Safe

Was wondering what you've heard or been told by your doctors about self tanning lotions while pregnant? Are they safe (after the 1st trimester, particularly)? Thanks.

MY doc sais they are ok, but some docs say no. The controversy is over the chemical dihydroxyacetone. It is what colors the skin. It only penatrates about 3 levels of skin so it is not absorbed into your blood stream. I work in a salon and use hair color, self tanners, perms, and other chemicals and my doc is not worried at all. I am more worried about all the polution in the air where I live!!

I hope not! I have a tanning spray booth in my house! I spray tan every week to keep my tan color....I feel so much better when I'm tan. DANY! I'll have to ask my doc but I'd think it would be okay...

I'm getting married next month and just asked my doc this yesterday. She said that it's probably not a good idea, but it's not necessarily bad. Exactly what DeeJay said, it's the chemicals that some say is bad, but it's not the end of the world if you do use it.

I have just heard mixed reviews but no study has proven the stuff harmful. One of the chemicals in the lotion (DH) would be bad for everyone (pg or not) if the skin absorbed it but there is no evidence that it does. I hate when there are conflicting views/opinions on stuff!!
