Chromosomal Screening

at my 13 week and getting chromosomal screening done tomorrow. I am skeptical about getting it done, since the outcome is not certain, but just a percentage chance of having a defect. Do I want to live in the uncertainty till the baby is born? I dont want to get amnio done. I am 29. What do other women out there think? What are your ideas concerning a test that gives uncertain results.

I am 19 weeks pregnant and did the AFP screen also known as the triple screen where they just draw blood. I am happy that I did this test. I had my level II ultrasound and a white spot on my babies heart was found but the doctor said if my afp came back negative it was nothing to worry about considering my age and that was the only marker. It freaked me out but is actually quite common. If I had not done the AFP I wouldnt know what to think and probably be driving myself crazy. I knew I wasnt going to terminate no matter what but it is nice to be prepared if needed. I say it cant hurt.

they call what they I am getting done tomorrow 'ultra screen'. it is a blood test and an ultrasound. How long was it before you got some answer back?

It usually takes about one week for the blood work but the ultrasound results will obviously be there as you are getting it done. The ultrasound is awesome maya! How far along are you? If it is your 20 week ultrasound you may be able to bring a vhs video and they will tape it for you! I just had my u/s and it was taped!!!

Maya, I did the screening at 12 weeks and I'm glad that I did. I don't want amnio either. Because I'm 35, my risk of a Downs baby was 1 in 270 and my risk of Trisomy 13 or 18 was 1 in 400. After the blood test and nuchal translucency measurement, my risk of Downs dropped to 1 in 635 and my risk of Trisomy 13 or 18 dropped to 1 in 9341. It took 4 days to get the results back. Also, having the ultrasound this early was great. I'm having a level II ultrasound in a month, but it was nice to have one this early and see the baby. Good luck!

thank you. I just have heard stories on these boards of women that come back from the screening with such bad percenteges.. well I should just be ready for it.. I've had two ultrasounds till now and yes! they are great. so nice to see the baby moving and see and hear the heart beating away.

good luck - November 2

I was one of the unlucky ones that had a positive result from the triple screen I think that test is c___p due to it is not really good there are false positives as well as false neg thank God in my case it was just that a false positive and my baby is perfectly healthy but doctors in my opinion should explain this test better most of us get a false sense of secerity when it comes back neg but the thing to remember with this test it is just a screening it can not tell you wheather or not your going to have a healthy or unhealthy child bottom line it just lets you know if you should have further tests to check for problems and I think for the most part it causes un-needed worry I went thru hell for about 2wks not knowing if my baby had a defect so good luck to you
