What is up with the Cord Blood thing. I totally don't get that. But every site seems to have advertising for it.

I believe cord blood banking is supposed to be like a health investment for your family. using stem cells, they can possibly help members of your family with genetic problems. Its fairly expensive though and my doctor said that since it is so expensive, it would probably only be worthwhile if my family had a history of problems. Thats what I've gathered.

that pretty much sums it up, but if you can't bank blood on your own, concider a public organization to donate your baby's cord blood to. That is what we did. hey use it to research different things like cncer and nerve damage and many others. And if later you need acces to it and it is still banked, you have first pick at it. Just a thought. We live in IL and donated ours to a bank in Saint Louis. We plan on doing the same for this one. (my dd is 21 months and I am 33 weeks pregnant withm y 2nd)

My doc said the same thing. Unless there is a long line of specific genetic issues or certain types of cancer in your family, cord blood banking was really not worth the money. I have read where it was used in isolated cases of infant siblings being sick, but couldn't really find anything else that made it it seem that signifigant. My doc did tell me that you could donate your cord blood (with plans made in advance) to certain medical university researchers that are searching for a cure for alzheimers and childhood cancers such as luekemia.
