Gest Diabetes Test

Hello, I'm 24weeks today and wondering if they will do the gestational diabetes test at my next appt. I've read up on what it entails, but what's the real scoop on this test? Is it really awful? and how long do you have to wait to get results? Thanks in advance!

Jessica- doctors seem to do the test around 28 weeks (but anywhere from 24-28). I'm guessing that if they didn't specifically tell you that you were going to do the test at your appt then they will probably just give you orders for the test and have you go to a lab for the test cause the test takes an hour. ANYWAY....I got the orange kind of glucose drink and if it is cold it really isn't bad. (I've heard that it is gross if it is warm). It really wasn't bad at all though. You drink the stuff, wait an hour, they take some blood, and you're done! I had my test on a Thursday and they called me the following Monday or Tuesday to tell me that my sugar level was a little but high. SO...I had to take the 3 hr test. PRAY that you pa__s the 1hr. Cause the 3hr test really does suck a lot. You have to fast for 12 hours....then you have to get your blood drawn...then drink the drink again...then wait an hour and get more blood drawn...then wait another hour and get more blood, then another hour and one more blood draw. They also can't let you leave the whole time just to make sure that the test is administered correctly. SO...it is basically getting stuck by a needle 2 times in each arm while being extremely hungry and waiting in a boring waiting room for 3 hours! I really did not enjoy it. BUT...I did pa__s that test just fine. Sorry- this was like a whole book......just thought I'd give you the details of my experience. Oh yeah...with the 3 hr I did it on a Sat and had results by the next Monday morning. So it was really fast. OH yeah..and one more thing...they will tell you that you don't need to fast before the 1 hour..and you don't...but be really really careful to not eat a lot of sugar for about a day before the test...good luck!

Hi jessica I had my one hour yesterday! I was just given a sheet for the lab at my last appt. I was told anytime after 26wks. I went to the lab, they gave me abottle of orange drink. It was very carbonated and tastes like really sweet orange crush. not too bad. Then I sat for an hour and they took my blood! It made me kinda sleepy, but my frined got really jittery and hyper and then crashed after. Sugar high! I should have the results within the week. Best of luck this is def not the worse test that could be done, and it was nothing really!

nanders, did you mean to say that the drink was very NOT carbonated???? Both the orange and the lime that I had were never carbonated, they were flat.....it doesn't taste too bad as long as it is VERY cold, I mean its really, really sweet and you have like 5 minutes to drink it...just pray that you pa__s the 1 hr. so you don't have to take the 3 hr..

Hi I have to take the 1 hour test on Monday. I'm not looking forward to it since I had GD with my last pregnancy. I'm going to watch what I eat for the next few days, if that makes a difference.
