Will eating sugar (for example, a roll of smarties) directly cause you to develop gestational diabetes? I have no family history of diabetes, and eat pretty healthy, but have my sweet tooth moments, and my coworkers are driving me crazy saying I will get it if I eat sugar at all. Help! I am almost 18 weeks.

Eating sugar will not directly give you gestational diabetes. It depends on how your body processes the sugar. Some women can eat as much as they like and not get gd, others (like myself) can cut it out of their diet to the best of their abilities and still get it. There are several risk factors which put you more at risk for gd: Family history, obesity, over 35, being a member of a high risk group (of Aboriginal, Hispanic, South Asian, Asian or African descent) etc. You can ask your doctor for more information. But don't worry, the occa__sional sweet tooth moment should be just fine. Check out the diabetes a__sociation websites. http://www.diabetes.ca/ (Canada) or http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp (U.S.)

Thanks Mingill. I will check out the website. I really appreciate your help. You've put my mind at ease, not my coworkers, though! :)

No problem, I'd just ignore your coworkers.
