Heartbeat Question

When can you start to hear the heartbeat with a regular stethoscope? Has anyone tried? I am almost 18 weeks and haven't felt any movement yet except all of a sudden I got my bump this week. I noticed it when I was laying flat on my back. I just wish I could hear the heartbeat at home without having to rent a doppler.

I recently bought a heartbeat monitor from walmart and they have them at sears also. I know that those dont start working usually untill 20 weeks. So I would think that it would be even later for just a plain steth. I dont know how much the one from the walmart would be in your area or if you even have a walmart in your area but they are only 20$ retail here. and i looked in a children's store that sells used equipment on occasion and found my heart beat monitor for less than 10$. So look around in the baby sections of stores near you.
