hi ladies. i am 17 weeks and i LOOOOOVE hiking! I can't wait to get the baby out into nature when he/she is old enough. I am due in November, so baby wil be WAY too young for snowshoeing or winter hiking (I live in NY) BUT in the spring by the time I will be wanting to get back out on the trails, baby will be at least 4-6 months... does anyone have any experience/information about this? Those front carriers look promising. ANd you carry a backpack anyway... I guess as long as you assume you may just end up havig to turn around depending on baby's temperament it can go well... anyone?

Depending on age, I would recommend facing baby outwards - especially when they're a few months older and like to see what's going on around them. I live on Vancouver Island and can't wait to take my baby out for small hikes on the beach!

Dh and I bought an Evenflo Snugli, You wear it on your front and it allows baby to face in (when they are too little to hold up their heads), face out (when they are older) and eventually you can wear it on your back with baby it it. It holds babies from 7 to 26 lbs. We're looking into the studier baby backpacks (the ones with an aluminum frame, about $100 US) for when baby is bigger, but still not ready to hike on their own. I don't know any U.S. stores, but check with your local outdoors store. This is our first, so we've never done it before but being avid nature lovers we want to get baby out on the trails asap. My big concern is bugs. Do a google search for "hiking with baby", that should turn up some useful info.
