How Much Caffiene Is Safe

Hi everyone, I am 14 weeks pregnant and don't know if it is okay to have coffee every once in a while. Some people have said to have NO caffiene AT ALL, and others say that less than 300 milligrams of caffiene a day is okay (about 3 cups of coffee). What does everyone think?

Everything in moderation is the key. It is just fine to have a cup of coffee a day. I, however, cut it out completly because I am incapable of drinking coffee in moderation. I LOVE coffee and I get caffine headaches in the afternoon. I figured that I get enough headaches as it is.

Ditto to Steff...although I heard that it's bad if you have like 10 cups a day, and go crazy ya know. With all of my pregnancies I've had an average of about 2 cups a day. My babies are all perfectly healthy...good size.

Thanks ladies! I feel better knowing I'm not the only that gives into the temptation of having coffee every once in while. :) I'm sure one cup every couple of days or so would be safe. Thanks again :)

Caffeine, in general, is bad for everyone. But since we're all addicted to caffeine and some of us *must* have caffeine everyday, doctors do say that as long as you take it in moderation, it's ok. However, if something is bad, then it's better to avoid it completely. But whatever floats your boats - in the end it's not just about what you eat or don't eat, but your health in general that's important.

actually if you drink coffee in moderation it can be beneficial. it is a good anti oxidant and isn't bad for you if you just have a cup or two a day.

I actually read that you should not drink more than 8 sodas in a day. Hello - I couldn't drink that many in a week! I cut out all caffiene until I got past the 12 week mark. Now I have a cup of tea every day and the occasional soda. I think it's fine to do that and my doctor totally agrees.

I have cut down on my caffeine. I drink about 3-4 cups a day (if I can tolerate it) and I have maybe a soda or iced tea in the afternoon as well. I drank caffeine during my pregnancy with my son (age6)and he is fine. There are pregnancy nazis galore out there and bottom line is modeation. Even a drink now and then is ok. Americans are very conservative when it comes to pregnancy and such. Europeans much less so and their babies are fine. Beware of the all or nothing types...this goes for after you have your child also. Breast feed or else! Do what you think is best...your gut instincts will guide you to what is right.

Actually caffine in general is not bad for you...only in the sense that it's addicting. Coffee is bad for you because the tanic acid in it, it eats away at your stomach lining. However it does not harm the baby. Which is what she was wondering.

ive heard that you should keep it under 2-300 mg's of caffeine per day, which is like 2.5-3 cups of coffee. in general, I have a coffee in the morning and a soda in the afternoon and the doctor said thats fine but watch the calories n the soda. haha. its up to you though use good judgment. YOU know your body better than anyone! im slowly learning that through this pregnancy. :o)

coffee isn't bad for you if you only have a cup or two a day. and ya caffiene can eat at your stomach lining but thats more likely if you take caffiene pills on an empty stomach. caffiene can actually be beneficial in moderation.
