Ive read a couple of you talking about your pregnancy being viable... what does that mean?

Jodie - July 6

It simply means your pregnant, if you got this after an ultrasound it just means that your still pregnant

TCM - July 6

It means a pregnancy that can continue. There are cases (eg ectopic pregnancies) where the pregnancy cannot continue and will result in miscarriages.

so me being 20 weeks and hearing the heartbeat and seeing movement on the u/s screen means that I am viable?

Viable mean capable of living, or continuing to live. When they mention it about a fetus, they sometimes mean that the baby would be capable of living outside the uterus. For example: At 28 weeks your baby is viable. ( to live outside the uterus) Not a dumb question at all, half the stuff my doctor mentions I ahve to ask him to elaborate on cause I dont know what he means!

Hi Karlie, your pregnancy is definitely viable. Melissa's definition is for babies being born being viable and you are not there yet.

My insurance company considers a pregnancy viable at 25 weeks. I have a friend with a 10 year old son born at 23 weeks - and he's one expensive baby, 3 months in a neonatal unit... Melissa's definition is correct... when people talk about viability, they usually are referring to the ability of the baby to survive outside the uterus. Earlier on in the pregnancy, a physician will say that the pregnancy is viable if it is going to continue... such as, there is a heartbeat seen on the early u/s... I would venture to say, if you see someone talking about viability on the first trimester forum, they are talking about the early on viability... if you see them talking about it on the second or third trimester forum, they are most likely talking about viability outside the uterus.
