Leg Swelling

Hey! So, I'm 24 weeks tomorrow, and tonight my legs started feeling weird...like a heavy feeling...when I looked down my feet were swollen, and my left foot and leg were huge!! Is this normal for this early?! Anyone else having issues with swelling? This is my first pregnancy, so I'm not really sure, I've never had issues with swelling pre-pregnancy. I'm worried because my dr's are monitoring me for borderline high blood pressure....Do I need to worry at all?!

Hi there, Are both your legs the same size? I am asking because leg swelling during pregnancy is perfectly normal, more common later on but certainly not unheard of in the earlier stages. If one of your legs is more swollen than the other then I would advise you get it checked out asap. Measure your legs at your: Ankle calf and thigh. If you find there is more than a 1.5cm difference then definetely get it checked out. I have had 2 pregnancy related Clots, the first when I was 17 and the second when I was 21 and my main symtom was leg swelling. Although both my legs were swollen my left leg was noticably bigger than my right. In your case its more than likely 'normal' swelling but its always better being safe than sorry, especially when it comes to your health, DVT (blood clots) go undiagnosed every day and the majority are harmless but you may as well chance it. If you can get to and A&E or ER department as for a blood test called a 'D-Dimer' you will know within an hour if everything is OK... All the best xx

Mandy- Thanks for your reply! My legs are normal again this morning....if it was something related to blood clotting would they remain swollen? Even after elevation? My left leg/foot was FOR SURE bigger then my right last night....Just curious..

As for your leg staying swollen I have no idea, With my 1st clot I took it at 31weeks and my left leg was almost 10cm bigger than my right, now that clot was strange and very rare, I had an illaic vein thrombosis and I spent 9 weeks in hospital having 2 operations before I got a c.section at 36 weeks... my leg did stay swollen but with Anti-ambolism stockings (flight socks or T.E.D) and elevation swelling did go down slightly. With my 2nd clot in September My leg was swollen, not a lot but I could notice it slightly around my left ankle. I went to the Doc the next day and the swelling had gone down so the Doctor wasn't going to send my for a blood test or Doppler (scan of my leg) but I went on and on at him that my leg felt ''heavy'' not quite the same as usual so he gave in and sire enough I had another clot, it was at the side of my knee, a lot less serious but could have been if it was left undiagnosed. So with my 1st clot my leg stayed swollen with my 2nd it didn't. If it turns out to be just normal swelling I would advise getting a pair of flight socks anyways as they are GREAT for sweliing. I am only 22 yrs now and would be of slim build and have NO family history of clots, mine have been just freak but again, its always best being safe than sorry Amanda www.1984mandy1984.piczo.com TAke out any dashes if they appear
