I've been wondering that myself... I've been told the 7th month...

I recommend reading consumer reports before registering. I read reports for about a month before registering and it is a good thing that I did. I did not know half of the negative and positive things about using certain products.

I am about 5 months and we have already registered. You can register now at places like babiesrus or ByeBye Baby because they don't carry stuff that changes a lot with the seasons. We read a lot of consumer reports on carseats, bouncers, backpacks, cribs etc,etc before registering too. You can also register at places like target but you'll have to maintain your registry there more becuase the frequestly put stuff on clearance and get new stuff in. I would give yourself a good month to month & a half before the shower invitations go out because you may change you rmind & once you get into serious shopping mode you may find certain things at certain stores that you like better.

I started registering at places like walmart.com and babiesrus.com back when I was only like 3 months. It's basically just a wish list, there's no real time to do it, just whenever you want to.
