Vicodin During Pregnancy

I am almost 16 weeks pregnant on my 4th pregnancy... Back in 1988, when I was 16 years old, I was a passenger in a very bad car accident... Ever since then, I get bad bad headaches. I get them almost everyday, some days there not as bad, but other days they are really bad....They seem to get really bad during pregnancy....With this pregnancy they have been the worst.... I was just in to see my OB doctor last week and he told me it was safe to use Vicodin during pregnancy or Ultram... I hesitate taking anything because Im scared it will hurt my unborn child, yet I can't stand these nasty headaches.Any thoughts???? Take Care, ~ Allie ~

Many docs will prescribe narcotic pain relievers to pregnant women. Vicodin is Category C for pregnancy, so I would ask to be switched to Percocet as it is a Category B pain reliever. Drugs are categorized based on the potential hazard they pose to a developing fetus. Cat B is safer than C. Talk with them further about this. You do not need to suffer in pain while pregnant but if you feel uncomfortable using these meds, go with your instinct. It is up to you:)

Oh, I should add that my docs prescribe percoset to me for my TMJ. I have spoken with three docs regarding this prescription, and none have taken issue with it. I have not needed to use it but they have told me to use it as needed, while pregnant. I have had this condition for several years and it causes extreme pain in my left ear and jaw.

MY DR. PRESCRIBED MY DARVOCET, FOR MY 2 HERNIATED DISCS, AND TOLD ME, IF TAKEN NOT TO FREQUENTLY, THEY ARE COMPLETELY SAFE, BUT I STILL GET HESITANT ABOUT IT. AS FAR AS YOUR HEADACHES I SUFFER WITH THOSE AS WELL. I WAS HIT BY A TRUCK AT 15, AND WAS ON MEDS FOR PAIN SINCE, UNTIL THIS PREGNANCY. I TAKE A SMALL PIECE OF DARVOCET ONLY WHEN THE PAIN GETS REAL BAD. HE MADE ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT IT, BUT I CAN'T GET MYSELF TO TAKE CLOSE TO THE FULL PILL, OR TAKE IT WHENEVER I FEEL LIKE I NEED IT, I JUST CAN'T DO IT. JUST ONCE IN AWHILE. IAM SURE YOUR BABY WILL BE OK. THERE ARE MUCH WORSE THINGS OUT THERE TO TAKE. HUGS!!

I have been taking vicodin almost my entire pregnancy for severe back pain. My doctor says it is safe and i am sure he would not give me anything that could possibly hurt my baby.

I'd try taking 3 Advil before I'd try the other narcotics. 3 Advils usually do the trick on stubborn headaches.

I would love to try advil, but im not suppose to take it because im on a daily dose of Lovenox shots ( Blood Thinner ) The only narcotics ive been on is the Vicodin, the doctor said you can use Ultam but I have not tried it.

I, too, suffer from chronic headaches and occasional migraines. With my second pregnancy they were so bad that I ended up in the er 2x where they administered iv morphine. My dr. then prescribed vicodin which I had to use almost daily. I delivered a very healthy 9 lb. baby boy.

My Dr. said not to take advil because it has not been properly tested on preg women. He gave me vicodin and said it was safe.
