WHAT IS A FALSE POSITIVE

Okay here's the thing. I've heard all the horror stories about expectant moms getting tested for down syndrome and recieving a false positive result. What EXACTLY is a false positive. At my last doctor's appointment I was told that the test that was done gave a percentage chance....For example to say a lady could have a 1 in 200 (which is supposed to indicate a positive result) chance of having a down syndrome baby. Is this the same test that gives the "false positive"? Any thoughts or knowledge of this would really be great!!

You're talking about the triple screen, or quad screen, right? A false positive is a result that indicates a need for further testing, when the baby is actually healthy. From what I've heard, a false positive is more likely the older you are.

Yeah Lily the test you are talking about is the same test. It is not that it says positive if the baby actually has downs, just that it says positive if the percentage comes back higher then normal. A lot of times the baby is still fine. Resulting in the false...positive.

My OB/GYN explained the test like trying to catch all the Sharks in a one mile radius in the ocean, using a net. You are not only going to get all the Sharks but you are going to get alot of other junk/fish (meaning alot of people whose results come back higher and there is nothing wrong). The test is good because it can indicate two other serious problems Spina bifida/neural defects and another disease which is really terrible and debilitating to the baby. Mostly people have a higher risk of the Downs Syndrome- Only stating that it's a higher "RISK" not definate.
