I was a firm believer that I would avooid medications at all costs....until I spoke with my doctor the other day. I have had this nasal drip (lovely) and a cough and runny nose for ever two weeks. I just could not take it any more, so at my last appointment I spoke with the doctor about this problem. She asked me if I was prone to allergies...ofcourse...the mold is terrible here in the east coast. She suggested taking Claritin D. I told her that I was trying to avoid medications; she rea__sured me that they USED to tell mothers not to take anything during pregnancy, but they found far too many mothers in the hospital with sinus infections....the last thing you want when you are pregnant is a high fever and a hospitalization. Needless to say, last night I finally could NOT take any more....I was unable to sleep, my nose feels like a flesh wound, and I was runny out of tissues. I consulted the list of SAFE medications during pregnancy...then made my way to the medicine cabinet....I found there benedryl. What a wonderful thing.....!!!!.....I was now able to sleep, and when I awoke....IMAGINE this....no SNOT (sorry to ge graphic). It was amazing. What I would suggest is talking to your doctor about the safe medications during pregnancy (perhaps they even gave you a handout during your first visit --- mine was in a little folder they gave me at my first prenatal checkup). When you get this information, decide which medication would minimize your symptoms and provide you with relief. It is very hard when you don't want to harm your child, but he/she is not benefiting by you extended cold symptoms. Best of luck.
