8wks And Unable To See Baby On Sonogram

I went to the doc today to get a checkup because i needed to get my progesterone checked. The doc said that she would do an Vaginal sonogram while i was there. She did it and we saw the sac inside the uterous and a very faint shadow inside the sac. The doc said she is going to check my blood to make sure my progesterone is going up and that we are heading the right direction. I thought that at 8 wks you should be able to see something? Am i mistaken... should i worry?

K - I think you at 8 weeks you can hear the heartbeat, not necessarily see anything. I think you need to be closer to around 16 weeks (don't hold me to that number) or so to see anything. I don't think you should worry!

Thank you for your response. The doc said today that she would have liked to see a heartbeat but didnt say anything about it being uncommon that she didnt hear one. I dont think anyone is accurate on the day i concieved or excately how far along i am. I had my last period on Dec. 22, 04 and according to that i would be about 8 weeks but she said that since i have a 32 day cycle it could be different. I really dont know and i didnt start to think about it until i go home. My husband held the sonopic up to the light and and sure enough you can see a circle inside the sac. So i know there is something in there... i just worry about a heartbeat and i the baby is not growing properly. Thanks again ...-K-

K - Glad I could help somewhat. I think you are fine, and shouldn't worry. If something were wrong, you'd most likely miscarry - the body's natural way of protecting itself. And you definitely don't have any signs of that happening! Just relax and enjoy being pregnant, and knowing that that little shadow inside the sac is going to be growing more and more the next several months! I'm so happy for you, and I hope everything goes well for you & baby! Congrats!!

I thank you for the well wishes. I guess the truth is i am worried because of the docs response to the whole thing. She was looking at the sonogram pic and said, "i would of liked to see a heartbeat but... we will draw some blood and make sure it is still growing". I guess that scared me into thinking something was wrong. She said that she barely sees anything in the sac and that was on the screen. When i got home my husband put it up to the light and he saw it and so did i. I guess i will know tomorrow Fri. when i get my test results back. I am just so scared that this wonderful gift will be taken away from me. -K-

Just remember that everything happens for a reason. And, I've learned not to put a whole lot of trust in the drs response or comments...you'd be amazed at how many women actually leave their drs office with just as many questions as when they showed up! I for one am a testament to that!! I feel like I'm just as lost as the second I stepped into the office the other week! But, honestly, would you expect to "see" a heartbeat, before you can even hear it?! That's why I don't think there's anything wrong, cuz you're not even supposed to be able to hear a beat until 8 weeks....and you were still 2 weeks from that! I do believe you'll be fine....and I know it's hard not to worry, but just be positive!! Big Hugs to you!!!

If my last period was Dec. 22 wouldnt that bring me at about 8 weeks. Or do i subtract two weeks from that because it was two more weeks from my last period that i ovulated. I am so frustrated. So do you think you can see a heartbeat at about 8 wks. or do you think it takes up to 10. I can tell you that her reaction to the whole situation was kind of alarming.

To find out how far along you are, you should count from the 1st day of your last period...so if you started on Dec 22nd....then you would be just over 9 weeks along. And to hear the heartbeat, the earliest you are supposed to be able to is 8 weeks...sometimes it can take up to 12 weeks before you can hear it. My sister heard hers at 12 weeks. To SEE a heartbeat, you need to be able to SEE the baby, which you can't really this early. You should be able to see the heartbeat at your ~20 week U/S. And, I know what you mean by "her reaction" which is why I said I don't base too much off of the drs reaction....becuase it hasn't helped me any. And so many women don't get answers at all...and are just left wondering. Don't worry my dear! Everything will be fine!! HUGS!

Thank you once again. Yes there was barely anything in the sac but you could see it if you hold it over the light. I guess its true... you can really read into what docs say, cause well... it was a doc that told me i would never be able to get pregnant naturally and well it only took me 3 months when we started trying. I was so happy... it was such a special gift and thats the reason i go so upset when we didnt see the heartbeat yesterday. Thanks again for chatting. -K-
