I just got AF (yippie.) so I'm supposed to call and schedule my SHG. I'd love experiences and/or tips! TIA

Hi snickel.... I had a shg last month... I took 2 Extra strength tylenol's... plus tow extra strenghth buckleys cold and flu tablets because i was fighting a cold and only after swallowing them realized that they were the same strenghth as the tylenol... I guess you could say i had 4 Extra strength tylenols in me...lol ... which is pretty dangerous and definetly was not done on purpose.... anyways back to the shg.... I went in and the doc had me put my legs up in the stir ups... she wiped me with betadine solution and then inserted the catheter into my uterus... and injected the saline through each of my tubes while watching it on the monitor.... I could feel the saline and the whole thing took about 5 minutes and it was a crampy feeling... like when you have really bad AF cramps... I didn't cry... and trust me i am quick to do that... I have a very low threshold for pain. So good luck... it will be over before you know it.

Thanks. I've been anxious to have testing done but now that it's scheduled (this Monday at 7:15!), I'm starting to get scared!

Hi Snickelfritz. I had one last month. My dr. told me I would have some cramping but I had none whatsoever. It was a breeze actually. I had it during my lunch hour and I went right back to work no problem. It showed that I had a 2cm polyp.....had it removed 2 wks ago. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

one more thing.....Do you know if your tubes are patent? Because if they are occluded it may be more painful.

Ji Snickelfritz...i had my tubes checked out last year...i had an ectopic..in sept..anyways it wasn't so bad except for about 3days later i was in terribly uncomfortable pain. II mean i have a HIGH tolerancefor pain and I thought it hurt, but i would rather know whats going and deal with the pain. I wish someone would have warned me about that before so i would have been prepared...My tubes thankfully ended up being in perfect shape and the M/S was a fluke. Good Luck!!

I only had some cramping and pain on one side while they were doing it and was fine afterwards. GoodLuck!!

Ok, so I'm not even going to lie. It was definitely the most pain I have ever felt in my life. My doctor said that my reaction wasn't a common one though, so rest easy that you probably won't have as hard a time as I did. I actually started contracting as if I was in a labor. I swore that day that I would never have another one of those lol, but if it comes down to helping me conceive then heck yeah, schedule me for 3! lol

Brenda really your docs said that it wasn't normal to feel pain??...mine said that i could feel it for a few days...it was the worst..but ya gota do what ya gotta do..i would really rather be labor than that...and i was in labor for 22hrs!!!

Lovely Mommy, I didnt say anything about what my doctors said about the pain?? They did say it would hurt and i believe varies from women to women. mine Only hurt one side and that was only when i had to turn on that side. They were dialating my tubes though, now THAT sounds painful, probably more so for you since you had had a tubal. (sorry you had to go through that). Now I would say the most pain i had to go through was when i had an endometrial biopsy done. That was excrutiating! it was very painful, even taking pain pills before hand. But was fine once they were done. LOL i was brave while they were doing it and even held a coversation with my aunt (she is a nurse at my docs office) but as soon as everyone was out of the room i let myself cry for a sec. I have endo and i do have a pretty high tolerance for pain in the belly area (tooth and earaches I am a complete baby) but that WOW indescribable. Well, Snicklefritz, Good luck! It isnt a very long procedure and is over quickly. they told me that after that procedure there was quite a few girls that came up pregnant. Good Luck again Snickel fritz!! I am really hoping for you and have been for a long time though you may not know it!

BrendaW - February 10

Sorry should have said *they were NOT dialating my tubes*

Kelsey - February 10

I am glad I opted out of the endo. biopsy then!!! omg, after my experience with the SHG, i said heck no to any more procedures. i don't want that kind of pain unless it's going to end with a bundle of joy in my arms.

So snickel, I'm just curious....You mean you are having a hysterosonogram not hysterosalpingogram? hysterosonogram is putting saline in the uterus to see the cavity of the uterus. hysterosalpingogram is injecting xray dye into the uterus and tubes to see if the tubes are patent. From what I've heard people say, the hysterosalpingogram is more painful.

LoVeLyMoMmY - February 12

Brenda i must have misread what you said i am so sorry...I didnt know there were two tpes of procedures...like i siad I only had to do it due my tubal!!..well i am trying again after three four months of not...i am terrified that this is gonna happend again for me..but i want abother baby so i will keep ttc. Dh is very wary but we are doing pretty well!!..I got AF yesterday so onto another cycle!!! good lluck ladies

snickelfritz - February 12

Mine was an SHG (saline hysterogram... aka saline sonogram... with SALINE). It was not the HSG which I may have to have later. Hopefully not. Today, after several minutes of discomfort that caused a lot of pain, I was simply told that my uterus was perfect (except for being tilted which I already knew). Great... waste of $320!

BrendaW - February 12

That's good Snicklefritz , at least you can rule that out. Did they shoot the dye through your tubes as well? Didnt they find something in your blood work a while back?

sarita - February 13

I'm glad it came out OK. Did you still have your period? When I looked at your chart the other day, it seemed you didn't have a full period (one day spotting, next day menses, next day spotting). What did your doctor say about your lining, etc? It wouldn't have been a waste if it found something:)
