At Home Inseminations

Have any of you used donor sperm and at home inseminations? or know of anyone who has? what was it like? were you successful? I am starting next month and I'm nervous that I won't succeed. Do you suggest ovulation strips? How do you know if you missed the surge that you're supposed to get? My doc told me to test around 4 p.m without drinking or eating 4 hrs before.

You want to use the ovulation predictor tests twice a day, once at about 11am and again at about 6pm. This will ensure that you don't miss the start of your LH surge. It is a good idea to restrict fluids a bit but just don't let yourself get too dehydrated. You should start using the opk's at about 7 dpo (days post ovulation) You need to start trying to conceive as soon as you see the test line beginning to come up and continue every 24 hours until 2 days after the line begins to fade.

okay, thanks! I bought ClearBlue Easy test strips, are those good? Or is First Response supposed to be better? I'm also going to buy those strips online that come in bulk, I've heard they are good. I'm glad you said to do it every 24 hrs until 2 days after the line fades, but that'd be a lot of money for me! (since I am buying sperm from a sperm bank)

Clear Blue Strips are great. I'm sorry, I don't know how the sperm bank thing works. How many "units" are you going to get? If you can get three, that would probably suffice. Is it very expensive? If you can only get a couple then I would try for the day the test shows a definite positive and then about 24 hours later. Does this help?

When it is time to start pregnancy testing then definitely use First Response. Test only with first morning urine and use the dip method.

hmm.. well I will get two vials, one for the day that I get my + OPK and one for the next night. They are $200 per vial or $275 per vial, depending on which guy I want. So a third vial would just be more money, obviously lol, but yes I would like to try 3 times per cycle.

Not to pry, but, how exactly does at home insemination work? I have heard of women using a turkey baster (not to offend please), but I never took it seriously. Does the sperm bank give you some sort of kit? I am just curious. If you don't want to answer that is okay, I would understand.

Sorry, just a quick correction. mjvdec01 said "You should start using the opk's at about 7 dpo (days post ovulation)" Though I imagine this was just a minor confusion, you need to take the OPKs pre ovulation not post ovulation which means you should start using them on CD

krissy2006 - March 21

oops, my post got submitted before I finished... anyway, you should do your OPKs twice a day starting on CD7 or 7 days past the first day of your period until you have gotten your + and are clearly testing negative again. (yes you should test past your + as many women can get +'s for more than one day) GL to you!

mjvdec01 - March 21

Oops, I meant cd7, not 7dpo. That wouldn't make sense.

It's no problem.. my doctor gave me several syringes to use and when I am about to ovulate I'll pick the sperm up from the clinic (it comes in a tank that keeps it frozen for up to a week) and then I let it thaw out for 30 mins then draw it up thru the sryringe and my better half will put it inside and hope for the best :)

jamers - March 21

krissy, how many days do women normally test + for after the 1st day?

mjvdec01 - March 21

It is called the two week wait. That is a good time frame to start with. If you have shorter or longer cycles then you probably want to go with the date of your expected period to take the hpt.

Does the sperm bank guarantee a certian sperm count minimum? Do you have any idea of the success rate for this procedure? I would suspect it would have to be injected with some force to help it get thru the cervical opening? I'm sorry, I must sound like a 12 year old asking how babies are made, this is just interesting to me.

oh I thought she was saying to test using the OPK's even after my first day of a positive, until it clearly was negative. and yes they have to pa__s extremely strict tests and have to have very healthy and motile sperm. Less than 5% of men that try it even get accepted to donate sperm. It's the same success rate as s_xual intercourse they say, the nurse said even 5% higher, making it 30% each cycle. It's not going into the cervical opening... it goes next to the cervix, just like intercourse.

krissy2006 - March 21

I meant you need to test with OPKs for ovulation until you get a + and then continue until you get a negative... if you get a + hpt or OPK re: pregnancy they will never go negative... :)

Jamers, have krissy and I managed to thoroughly managed to confuse you. lol. Thanks for the info. I was really curious as to how that all worked. I am pregnant myself, 22 weeks 2 days and expecting a baby boy. My due date is july 24th. Good luck to you and your hubby.
