Concerned About Being Potentially Pregnant On The Pill

Please help! I have been experiencing typical signs of pregnancy. I am on the pill, and my AF isn't due until Monday. I did two HPT, and both came back negative. My doctor couldn't recommend anything to me with regards to my symptoms except that I might be pregnant or should take an antacid. I'm worried about continuing to take my pill and possibly being pregnant, but I feel confused about what to do next since both HPT's came back negative. I am planning to see if AF comes next week, but until Monday, what do I do about my Pill? I'm still scheduled to take it. If I'm not pregnant, I don't want to stop the Pill and then become pregnant. If I am pregnant, I don't want to continue taking the pill. However, I need a contraceptive because I am married. Someone help please!

Stop taking the pill til you miss AF (if you do miss) and if you find out you're pregnant, then you are! Til then, there are other methods of contraception...condoms?

Girlfriend, can you use the sponge? Or condoms? Or are you allergic to latex? I think these things might help you in your predicament, but I don't know if you really want to use any sort of spermicide until you're certain that you aren't preggers.

Everyone, thanks so much for your input. I talked with a nurse today and all she could suggest was to talk with a doctor. I am feeling terrible, nauseated, and like I have awful gas. I just want to know if I really am pregnant. The nurse told me to stay on the Pill to avoid further "cramping" but I'm not sure if I should trust her. I'm worried about stopping the pill suddenly due to the fact that I read that sperm can live inside your body for up to 7 days! It has been less than 7 days since my husband and I were last intimate, and since we weren't using any other form of contraception at the time since I am on the Pill, I wonder if I could potentially get pregnant (if I'm not already) if I go off the pill. Good grief! Do any of you have any suggestions? Or do any of you have any knowledge of women you know who have become pregnant while on the pill. I just can't figure out what else this sickness could be. I realized that I did forget 1 pill early last week, but I took 2 the following day. I couldn't believe I forgot it, as I usually remember every night. Anyway, any suggestions anyone has are highly welcome. Should I go in for a blood test?

Laura - I have heard of several people getting pregnant while on the pill...one of my sisters' best friends had that happen to her twice! The only true, 100% foolproof contraceptive is abstinence! : ) I haven't heard that sperm can live up to 7 days...I've only ever seen 3-5 at most. Do you know when you ovulated? Did you have s_x around that time, give or take a day or two? I'm sure you have already pa__sed your fertile period, as you are due for AF in a few days, so I doubt you could get pregnant if you skip some days on your bc pills - the egg won't last long enough until your next ovulation. I wouldn't worry about testing again, until after you miss AF, if you do miss. The majority of hpts out there won't detect the pregnancy hormone that early anyways. Good luck!!

MandyD, and everyone else, Thanks so much for your responses. It's so nice to have people to talk with after speaking with nurses all day who can't give me any true advice. I can't believe that happened to your sister's best friend twice! Lol. Well, it might have happened to me too. Ok, so here's the deal. My last normal period began January 7th. My next period began February 10th. (A day later than normal) It was a very odd period- brown discharge and no red blood. I thought it was because I had changed the week my period fell on the month prior. (An advantage of the Pill). Anyway, I didn't think anything about it until now. So, last weird AF was January 10-12. Then, on the 14th, or 15th ( I can't remember exactly) I forgot to take my Pill. My hubby and I were intimate on the 16th, and then on the 19th the nausea started, and hasn't stopped. It is just so awful. Next AF is due next week, I guess I will wait to see if I miss it. I heard that sometimes women who are on the Pill don't miss their periods. What do you guys think about a sensitive blood test late next week, regardless of AF showing up? Thank you SO much everyone. I feel slightly less crazy unloading on all of you! But not really... :)

Laura - I think you should wait and see if you get AF next week, and if not, then when you're about 1 week overdue, i'd do a sensitive hpt. If you get neg result, and still no AF, then I'd go to the dr for a blood test. Blood test won't be much help before missed AF either. Hope this helps!! And, the period you had on/around Feb 10th - how long did it last? Could have been implantation bleeding, if you are one of the ones who gets pregnant on bc. That would have been pretty close to the right time for IB.

MandyC, the period I had in February lasted from Thursday- Saturday. (10th-12th). My periods never come until Wednesday anyway, but they usually last through Sunday. Now that I think of it, I didn't even really have cramps my last period. It was just thick, brown, and not wet and runny as usual. But, I had spotted a little bit roughly 2 week prior, and my January period had been one week prior to the spotting. Anyway, hope this makes sense. Thanks for your advice. I guess it's waiting for AF for me and feeling miserable in the meantime. MandyC, have you had children? If so, how did you know when you were pregnant? Do you know any more about your sister's best friend's story? Thanks so much for your input, it is easing my completely confused mind!!!!

MandyD - February 23

Hey Laura, sounds like the last period was not normal, seeing as it was a couple/few days shorter than normal, and wasn't blood but brownish discharge. I have not had any kids yet, but I'm either pregnant now, or still ttc. I haven't had a period since Nov, so basically I'm just waiting for now. I have lots of symptoms, so that's why I think I may be pregnant now. If I am, I think I'm around 8-9 weeks. My sister just had a baby in December...and I was actually in the room with her - it was a very interesting experience, and I'm glad I was able to be there. Really, the only thing I know about my sisters' friend's pregnancies...she had been on bc for 2-3 years when she got pregnant with her first child. Then, 5 months later!!! she became pregnant with her 2nd (was back on bc at this time). Glad to help any way I can!! Keep me posted. : )

Laura - February 24

Hey MandyC, That is so amazing about your sister's best friend! Apparently God wanted them to have two surprise children! :) Anyway, I spoke with a nurse friend of my mother's tonight and she said she thinks I am either pregnant or experiencing a weird manifestation of a flu virus. I really don't feel like it's a flu bug- I have NEVER felt like this before, and I've had the flu many times. It's waiting for AF for me! I don't know how I will last until next week. Let me know how everything is going in your journey as you ttc. All the best.

Oh, everyone, tonight I had a spicy Mexican soup. Afterward I felt a burning sensation in my chest almost like heartburn. Anyone thinking they're pregnant have any similar symptoms?

rose - February 24

a good friend of mine was on the pill and didnt find out she was pregnant until she was 5 months...through ultrasound they said her baby looks fine so i wouldnt worry...hope everything works out!!!

Laura - February 24

Rose, thanks a lot for your encouragement. It's great to hear about women who have become pregnant on the Pill and had healthy babies. Do you know if your friend had AF during the first few months of her pregnancy?

Niki - February 24

I got pregnant while on the pill and i had a healthy baby boy. My dr told me in the first month of pregnancy a lot of people take meds, smoke, drink alcohol because in the first month most people don't know they are pregnant. It isn't until the 6th week that the baby starts to share your blood so its safe to stay on the pill until your AF date.

Laura - February 24

NIki, thanks so much for your response. Did you have AF while you were pregnant? What were your symptoms? My AF is due next week, and I had read that sometimes women who are on the pill will continue to have their period even when they are pregnant. Was this the case for you?

Niki - February 24

No that wasn't the case. But my Dr did send me for a sonogram right away to verify my due date because she said that it is common to have AF while pregnant and on the pill. I took a HPT test 4 days after my AF due date and it was positive. The only pregnancy symptom that i had was that i was very tired all the time. So i never in a million years thought i could be pregnant, when the test was positive i almost fell over. Then i had to tell my husband, we were both shocked at first but then we got over it and we both love our little boy so much.

Laura - February 24

Niki, that is a great story! It might be that I have experienced the same thing. What brand of HPT did you do? Do you know which ones are the most sensitive? Btw, how far along were you when you found out you were pregnant. I hope you and your husband are very happy and that your little boy is healthy and strong.
