How reliable are the blood tests? How soon can we test? Had one yesterday - it says neg. Should I just accept that or still hope?

A qualitative blood test is not much more sensit_tve than a urine test - in the region of 25 to 50 hCG thingies gives a positive. A quant_tative blood test gives a number, and 5 hCG thingies is the cutoff for "no point in testing further". Since hCG levels double every few days, eventually ending up in the tens of thousands, waiting a few days is usually a better proposition than going to a more expensive test. Which said, some pregnancies are faster out of the gate than others. Some may give a positive urine test several days before a missed period, and rarely one may wait a month after conception to go positive. Around here most say don't do a urine test until a week after a missed period (3 weeks after conception). If you get a negative and still feel pregnant, test at weekly intervals until you miss a second period, then make a doctor's appointment to see what the heck is going on.
