what is a hook effect or a false pregnancy?

Perhaps you are asking about a molar pregnancy, where the placenta forms but there is no fetus. Surgical intervention is required. The hook effect appears to refer to extremely high hCG levels which fool the test into giving a negative reading. Hope I have this right.
