Ladies and Grandpa Viv - January 3

I'm not sure where to ask this one, and this forum seems to be busiest... so here goes. Please bear with me, I'm long-winded. :o) My hubby and I are trying the Shettles Method for a girl. Yesterday, on my ovulation sticks I got that line I usually get the day before the surge. It gets just a tad darker than a negative day, but not near as bright as the day of surge. So I told my hubby that yesterday needs to be the last day of "trying". We aren't going to do it again this cycle. My surge will be today I think. I have been reading today, and I think ovulation occurs the day after the surge (am I right?). So the sperm should have about 2 days before ovulation. Maybe the Y's will be gone by then. Ok, I have 2 questions.... has anyone ever used this method, and actually had a girl after already having boys (I have 2)? And my second question is..... does anyone know where I can read up on sperm and the x chromosome? I'd like to find some info about the probability that maybe my hubby carries fewer x than y... if that's even possible. It may be 50/50, but I can't find any info on this. I worry that if he doesn't contribute X in any of his sperm, then trying s_x selection is in vain, and will prolong conception. Viv, seems like you usually know where to read up on stuff, so I'm hoping that if nobody knows the answer, you might can help me find some articles.

I actually seen something like that on the discovery health channel. From what I saw it is possible for a man to carry fewer X than Y(or vice versa). I also saw that the male sperm (Y)swims faster but has a shorter lifespan (24hrs) and the female (X) swims slower and lives for up to 72 hours. So it sounds like you are doing the right thing b/c you want to have intercourse about 36 hrs before ovulation, this way the x's are still swimming and the Y's are all gone. The thing is, if he has more Y's than X's, and you have s_x 36 hrs before ovulation most of the sperm will be dead and that will lessen your chances of pregnancy, but if you do get preg it will be a girl. Think of it as a race, the Y's are very fast but don't have endurance and the X's move at a slow steady, pace, she'll get there, she just needs more time.... Don't let the boys beat her to the punch (lol)..... I really think that you are doing every thing right.....Good Luck!!!! Hope I didn't confuse you.......

M~ I saw some info on this site that may help you understand when you surge. http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/opk.html I am clueless (although highly interested) about the Shettles Method, so i'm not even sure if this info will help. I'll try looking around the internet for some info to help you, and maybe when you figure it all out, you can pa__s on your wisdom and help us conceive a girl as well. (we'll begin TTC in the Spring)

tiffani- Thank you. That site was informative! I'm starting to get worried. I have had that "fade-in" thing going on since Sunday. Sunday it got a little darker, so yesterday I figured I would have the big surge, like I have the last few times. Well, I did the op test yesterday evening at the same time as always, and it was darker than Sunday, but still not that definite line that is darker than the control line. I'm worried I have stopped having s_x too soon. We did Sunday night, but that's the last time. So I've pa__sed that 36 hour mark, and am headed toward 48. I just hope those little X swimmers hang on for a little longer. I just came from the bathroom, and I have a small amount of that white thick stuff that happens with ovulation, plus I have those little cramps. But I'm not sure if that stuff happens DURING ovulation, or just before. --- To be someone who has 2 cents for everyone else, I sure am confused about my own body. LOL --- And Nancy, thanks for the info. I got on Discovery Health and looked around, but couldn't find it. I have looked and looked, and can't find anything about x/y ratios in sperm. I found one thing that said "normally" it is equal. But that's all I can find.

It was not on the website sweetie, it was on a show where they were trying to help some couples get pregnant and the men had issues with sperm or something. They played it on baby week about 6 or 7 months ago. They'll play it again, I'm sure. But, the show wasn't about X and Y chromisomes, they only mentioned it. The show was about women that were being artificially inceminated with their husbands sperm,,,,,

Oh, ok. Thanks! I'm still looking around, and I think I've finally hit on the right search term. So if/when I find anything, I'll post it.

tiffani - January 4

Okay, I now know more about male sperm than I ever wanted to. After all my searching all I could find was 2 sites that mentioned the X and Y chromosome represented equally in male sperm. They didn't elaborate beyond that in terms that anyone other than a "spermologist" (lol) could understand. I also read up on Shettles and it seems to me like you are right on the cusp of the ideal conception time for producing a girl through his method. So lets see... if ovulation occurs 24-36 hours after the surge (which you predicted would happen on the 3rd) then I would think that those little X chromosomes are hooking up with the egg as I write this, while all the Y chromosomes have gone off to Y chromosome heaven. Baby girl wishes to you. Good luck.

Thanks tiff! I finally zeroed in on "ratio of x and y", and "ratio of x to y". I entered both into Google, and got a few things. Mostly I got mathematical stuff, but I found a few "spermology" stuff. LOL. Mostly, it says it is pretty much 50/50. I'm sure there are exceptions. Nancy saw something of the sort on tv. so it does happen, but it looks like it is a rarity. As for the Shettles thing, the little cramps I talked about just a little while ago have now intensified. I'm crossing my fingers that the egg is getting ready to release, and the little X's are waiting there, while the Y's are watching "from above". LOL Ok, I'm getting a little too silly now. I think I'm overwrought with anticipation and excitement. If anyone finds anything else, please share. Thanks!!--- I'll keep you updated!

Google s_x selection conception ... Read http://www.myboyorgirl.com/genderselection.html ...(no hyphens). I wouldn't be spending any money on quack promises, but good luck anyway..

m - January 5

Update - I had more cramps and discharge yesterday evening. But still not as much as the previous couple of months. And the surge line finally got dark, but not as dark as the past couple of months. I don't know what's up. It is almost 60 hours since the last time ttc. I'm a little worried that I quit too early, but please ladies, cross your fingers for me. Coming off of 2 miscarriages, I'm quite nervous anyway!!

tiffani - January 5

It's been 60 hours, but remember those little guys last 72. Relax (yeah right, I know) and let nature take it's course. It's too late to ttc a girl now using Shettles method, so there is nothing you can do about but sit and wait. I'll say it for you, uggghhhh! I really dont think you quit too early. I'm keeping the faith for you! Fingers are officially crossed. Good luck!

m - January 5

tiffani, you are so supportive! Thank you so much!! I've even got toes crossed at this point. LOL

E - January 5

I have my fingers, toes, legs, and arms crossed for you!!! How was your vacation from school? Must have been wonderful to get away from the kiddies. Better watch your back on this forum or you might get busted for being on here during school hours, LOL:) I wish my home computer worked with this site.

E - January 5

Hey ladies, by any chance do you watch The Amazing Race on Tuesday nights?

m - January 5

Thanks E! I really appreciate how nice you guys are! And yes, I did enjoy the break. But now, with schedule changes, my cla__s sizes have increased, so this semester is going to be a bit more stressful. I invested in a time clock, so every time I want to get on here, I just go punch out! LMAO! Maybe that will make our on-line trader feel better! hee hee - I don't watch that show. My tv schedule is full. LOL With recording All My Children every day, and then tuning in to my nightly shows, I vowed not to get involved in any additional shows. I've turned into a TV junkie! :o)
