Hi everyone, I got my results today and I'm pregnant!! wow I can't believe it :) However, the level of HCG seems low ie 8 mU /ml.. Keeping in mind that I did this test 4 days before my period was due, is the fact that my hcg level is low a problem? what could that mean??

What did the doctor feel about it? That does seem low, however, do not worry. Some women have very slow rising hcg levels. Did he tell you to come back in 3 days and test again to make sure they are rising? If he didn't, then go on your own. You need to keep an eye on your levels and make sure they rise.

I got the blood test done without a prescription (I live in France and that is possible here) So my doctor doesn't know I'm pregnant yet. I suppose I should make an appointment asap. I'm worried because I'm so happy to be pregnant and I would be so sad if it didn't work. Do you think that could mean that the pregnancy won't go through?

Oh no, please don't be worried. That's not what I'm saying at all. I just want you to keep an eye on it. I would go see your doc, AND I would get another test in 3 days and see how much they've risen. Your doc can interpret it for you. Don't be sad. With my youngest son, and with one of my miscarriages, it took nearly 2 weeks AFTER my missed period to get a faint positive on a hpt. You probably just have slow rising hcg. If that is the case, that is not a bad thing. Don't worry. Take care of yourself and don't stress.

http://www.obfocus.com/questions/qanda7.htm .... gives min/max values for hCG in the first weeks. There is a slightly increased chance of the pregnancy not going through if the hCG levels are low, more so in older women. I wouldn't worry about it. You would not have tested positive on a home pregnancy test in the USA. Congratulations!

ok thanks m, I appreciate your advice. I'll try not to worry! It's true that I tested very early..without even waiting to be late for my period so that may be why the levels are low. Could the hcg level be high enough to be positive but not mean that I'm really pregnant?

thanks viv, I'll have a look at the website!

That's a good chart. It just goes to show that being on the low end of that does not mean miscarriage. I have a healthy baby boy to prove it. Don't worry about it right now. Just relax and go get another blood test in a few days.

No, I think any trace of hcg means positive. However, some doctors will only consider it positive if it reads 5, or 10, or whatever they set that bar at. But again, it takes pregnancy to give you any amount of hcg (as far as I know).
