Question Re Quantitative HCG Level Test

My doctor asked for this test and the results will not be in until Monday. I am so very curious: The test will give me a number - then what should I do with it? Can I assume that if the number is low compared to the average I will most probably have a miscarriage? I am 6 weeks in. Thanks.

Low levels do not always mean miscarriage. Some women have slower rising levels than others. And by the way, results from one of those tests take one and a half to 2 hours. I would call and demand the results now! They shouldn't string you along like this. Don't be scared. The level will depend on how far along you are. The key is to be tested again 3 days after the first test to make sure your levels are rising. That's the important part. Keep us posted.

I was so disapointed because took the test yesterday and they a__sured me the test would be in today - they closed at 1 pm so now I have to wait ... It makes sense to take a second test for comparison reasons. thanks!

ok. try not to worry over the weekend. don't anticipate miscarriage since you may find out monday that your levels are right where they need to be. just keep yourself busy over the weekend and try not to worry! Also, if I were you, I'd ask the doc to do a 2nd test Monday for comparison. Ask him to request the results STAT, and the lab will get them to the doc in an hour or 2. That is what my doc does. Let us know what the results are. :o)

http://www.obfocus.com/questions/qanda7.htm gives you an idea of the enormous variability of hCG from one pregnancy to another. If the doctor asked for the test it is to confirm what he thinks he is seeing, whatever that may be. He probably sends the sample to a lab across the way, and they are backlogged or gone home early. We are hoping for a happy outcome!
