Questions About Luteal Phase Defects

Okay, here's my story. I had a baby nearly 5 years ago this July and got pregnant again last May, however it ended in miscarriage last July. I never charted my periods or ovulation before b/c I always just assumed that I ovulated 14 days after LMP and 14 days before the next period was due, with my 28 day cycles. Well, since I had my miscarriage last year, my cycles have yet to be completely regular. They range anywhere from 25-32 days (with the 32 day cycle only happening once). All of my other cycles, AF has come a little early. Well, my last cycle I started AF on the night of April 15th (very late like midnight) which was 2 days early. I happened to be at the Dr. on Friday, April 29, for some pain I've been having for a while and they did a va___al ultrasound and the doctor told me that I was ovulating that day, so I expected to start my period 2 weeks from that day. Well, here it is Wednesday and I go to the bathroom this morning and I there is little miss AF!! So, I started 3 1/2 days early (from my normal 28 day cycle that I used to have), and my luteal phase was only 12 days!! This may sound stupid ut I'm not exactly sure what the details are regarding luteal phase defects, since I always ovulated normally and had 14 days between. Would a 12 day luteal phase be considered normal or is there something wrong with that? Any help on the subject would be appreciated!!

Sorry to hear about your loss last year. Hope you are ok. From what I understand, the average is 14 days, but the luteal phase can be from 12- 16 days average. I don't even know exactly when I ovulate, I just know it's around CD16 and that leaves me with a luteal phase of 15 or 16 days b/c I have a 32 day cycle, give or take a day.

Thanks LadyD!! I've just always heard that it was supposed to be 14 days before your next period so I was a little worried that it was a bit shorter! Hopefully it is nothing to worry about. I'm not TTC this month anyways, but just want to know for the months to come! Thanks for help!!!

Oh...and thanks for your kinds words regarding the miscarriage. I am doing fine now. It took a while to get okay with it, but it only made my burning desire for another baby that much stronger!!!!

Sorry about your loss. I think anything under 10/11 days is not good because your body does not give the egg enough time to implant. I had an 8-9 lutual phase with a 28 day cycle. My dr put me on clomd to regulate my olvulation and bame-PG! Good luck!

Amber, a luteal phase defect is <10 days. 12 days should be just fine.

Oh, you welcome, Amber and good luck ttc.

Thanks ladies! I'm very relieved to hear that it is in the normal range!! Good luck to you all TTC and Congrats on your pregnancy Twinmom2be!!!

Amber, anything under 12 days would be considered a luteal phase defect.
