Spotting

My AF was 5 days late so I took a home preg test and it came back positive, twice. That was 2 days ago. I woke up this morning and discovered a brownish discharge. It's been happening all day, very, very lightly though. I don't know if this is normal or not?? My husband and I are worried b/c this is our first pregnancy. I feel different things in my pelvic area but don't know if they are normal or a sign that something could be wrong. It doesn't feel like menstrual cramps, but it does feel like a faint cramp. Does that make sense. Just worried and could use some advice from others!!

You can actually have some light spotting when the egg implants. Cramping is normal too as long as it is not severe. If the spotting continues for some time or increases I would call your doctor.

Brown spotting is perfectly normal in early pregnancy. One reason for this type of spotting is called implantation bleeding. This occurs approx. 2 weeks after conception and 4 weeks since your last menstrual period. Another reason this could be happening is your body could be releasing old blood. Neither of these reasons are cause for concern.

I too had spotting but mine was red and lasted for more than a week. I was very nervous and had blood taken once and then again 48 hrs. later to ensure my hormone levels were increasing properly. They were. When the spotting still continued over a week, I went in again so they could listen for a heart beat. Again, everything was normal. Shortly after that the bleeding stopped. My doctor said it is very common and they get calls everyday from women who are spotting and as a result concerned. I also know several other women who've experienced the same thing ranging from brown to red in color and light to heavy spotting, all pregnancies turning out normal. My doctor said as long as it's not heavy like a "heavy" menstrual flow and accompanied by "severe" cramps, it's probably nothing. If you are still concerned, give your doctor a call and ask them to test your hormorne levels, it should double every 48 hrs. Hope that helps!
