Since I'm unemployed at the moment, I've found myself watching lots of "A Baby Story" all this week. Wow, what a difference the epidural seems to make! My mother used to teach Lamaze, so I've always been convinced that I'd do it naturally. After watching the difference between the two experiences, I just don't see the point. Do I want to be screaming in agony and in horrible pain or not screaming at all and more content in the experience. I'll take the latter, please!

I would be interested if anyone knows of any benefits to doing it naturally

LOL...I'm right there with you Lin!!! I've always said "why be in pain if you don't have to?" I'm all about the drugs!!! Of course, my first was a c-section and my Dr. says all of my others will be too, but if I was to have one naturally, I would definitely get an epidural. My mom had me c-section, and then V-backs with my brothers. With my first brother, the epidural didn't take and she ended up having to have him naturally. I remember going in to see her in labor and I started crying because I was literally scared for her. I had never seen anyone in that much pain!! She said it was the worst pain she has ever felt, like someone was ripping her open down there! Ouch, not something I would EVER want to experience!!!

Oh and by the way, "A Baby Story" is one of my fav. shows! I watched it EVERY day when I was home for maternity leave and cried during every episode. Well, that was 4 1/2 yrs. ago and I STILL cry when watching those babies being born!!

LOL!! I know!! I am so scared and not even preg yey! lol! One of my biggest fears is having the epidural wear off while pushing!! This happened to one of my friends! I want to be one of those ppl who keep pushing after the babys out bc Im so numb down there!! lol! My cousin said that while she was pushing her leg kept falling off the table..lol..she couldnt feel it!!! lol!!

You're so right, Lin! I saw a TLC show called From Conception to Birth the other night and my dh and I were starring horrified at this animated representation of a baby wiggling out of the uterus. They keep showing it again and again to demonstrate the flexibility both in the newborn's skull and the mother's pelvis....my god! The animated pelvis would expandso far as the baby wriggled out. I kept looking down at my own pelvis, and finally turned to dh and said, "maybe this isn't such a great idea after all. WOuld you mind carrying the baby to term for me?" And he said no way his pelvis wouldn't bend like mine. Although I still plan on having my child to be v____ally, I can see why mother's ask for c-sections....although that whole process is equally as disturbing to me. I guess once you get pregnant, there's just no going back!

On the Baby Story that was just on, the doctor turned to the woman and said "I'm going to have to do the episiotomy now." Man, I hope he doesn't bother telling me if I need one! I certainly don't want to be expecting it. *shiver*

Oooh, that'd be creepy. I'd rather he just put it in and say, "there".

LOL Girls.....I have had all three! First dd was a ceserean, which is ok, except for the long recovery process and longer hospital stay ( and the fact that I had a mini stroke on the table, but thats not the norm...).....second dd was induced, the epidural did not take, so I felt every little thing, and physically threatened my nurse (LOL)....ugh....don't recommend it, especially for a 12 hour labor like I had. My ds, on the other hand, I had an epidural and it was absolutely lovely....they had to tell me that his head was out cause I couldnt feel it....My water broke at 12:30 at night, got the epidural as soon as I arrived, felt NOT one contraction, and gave birth at 6:30 am....if all births were like that....we'd all have 15 kids! LOL!!

jeanette, I love that you describe an epi as "absolutley lovely"....like having tea with your friends or upon viewing a friends new sofa or a walk in the park on an autumn day=) That's what I'm talking about!

jeanette - March 21

Lin, actually, there is so much pressure down there that you don't feel the episiotomy....its numb, even without the epidural....at least it was for me...its afterwards when you get the feeling back that its uncomfortable....thank the Lord for sitz baths in the hospital!

jeanette - March 21

LOL Cady....the birth of my son was a wonderfully peaceful experience....like I said, I wish all births were like that!

oh yes, bring on the epidural.....I had one and would not change that fact. I wish I asked for it sooner. I had a slow labor and they had to speed up my contractions so they gave me pitosin and ordered the epidural. Well the nurse administered the pitosin and had to wait two hours for the anesthesiologist for the epidural. Never, I repeat, NEVER, get pitosin with out the epidural. I mean the worse possible pain that barely even registers as pain as it was so awful.....I took Lamaze, and pardon my language, screw Lamaze........lol! I was having a contraction when they gave me the epidural and as soon as he pushed the medicine, he said you may feel your legs tingle. I am like what legs, and where did the contraction go? They had to tell me when to push, cause I couldn't feel the contractions coming on.....it was lovely to use Jeanette's word. I would have choose wonderful, God's gift to laboring woman........

jeanette - March 21

wow Emily.....no doubt about the pitocin.....AND the epidural didnt take.....UGH. Gives me shivers just remembering.......

PLEASE look at this site!!!! www.una__sistedchildbirth.com This will totally change the way you look at childbirth...

Lin - March 21

Jeanette, it's not the feeling of the episiotomy that scares me, it's the knowing that it's about to happen. I'd just rather not know ahead of time! Ugh, the thought gives me the willies.

jeanette - March 21

No way!! Not for me, thanks!
