Wilcox 1995 research: Are ovulation prediction tests worth doing? Pelvic ultrasound looking at the ovaries is considered the gold standard in ovulation prediction in a research setting but obviously in a practical application of a woman trying to conceive, ultrasound is not used. Urinary LH testing has been shown to have a 100% correlation with ultrasound as far as predicting the timing of ovulation. In that same study, they looked at cervical mucous changes, basal body temperature (BBT) charts and salivary ferning. Cervical mucous changes only had a correlation of 48%, salivary ferning correlated 37% and BBT has a 30% correlation.

HI mulgajill, what is Urinary LH testing and how is it done? Sorry for ignorance! Your research sounds interesting. Thanks for posting it!

THANKS Mulgajill- you know how neurotic I have been about this! Mu OPK was pos, no big cm change, and no temp change yet. This makes me feel a bit normal now! ALISON- LH is the surge your body has before ovulation- ovulation preidctors measure it when you use the urine ones (pee on stick ones- or strips).

Thanks Stacey :o)

Thank you for that information. I am conducting my own experiment with all of the methods, since I am having a hard time figuring out my ovulation day, if I am ovulating.

So does that mean that I cant rely wholly on temps and cp? Could I have ovulated earlier???

OCD- I am doing the same thing this month- using everything I can, temp, cm, cervix, opk's...so far nothing is ailigning..had pos opk- some cm,not temp surge. SIGH! Emily- I know that there are people out there that do rely solely on temps.

I think it means that it is ok to use any methods... but in some people they will work but in others not... depends on the individual... bbt is cheap and obviously works for lots of people (30% at least according to the study) but the opk probably the best choice... and the mucous is probably good to follow IF you get it... but not everyone gets it despite what the fertility imfo on the net seems to say (ie: it is VERY important... i have never had the eggwhite thing and do have two kids so i think if you get the eggwhite cm it is worth tracking/using it as a sign of ovulation, but you can certainly get pregnant without it).

Thanks for the awesome info mulgajill! I'm pretty early in my TTC journey, and have been trying to decide which route to go... I think I'll order those OPKs after all.
