Vitamins Amp Folic Acid

Hey everyone, I have a question about vitamins. Do you guys take folic acid on its own or prenatal vitamins that has folic acid in it? I'm just wondering if prenatal vitamins are something that people take while they are trying to get pregnant, or if they're not necessary until you get pregnant. I know that folic acid is something you should have in your system a few months before you conceive for it to have a good effect on preventing neural tube defects. I don't know if prenatal vitamins work the same way. Maybe just a normal multivitamin plus folic acid is all that's necessary while you're trying to conceive.....Any info would be much appreciated!

Prenatals are the best all around vitamin for a women to take daily... even when not ttc. Hope this helps :) Good luck!

A normal multivitamin is just fine, so long as you indeed supplement it with folic acid. I actually quit the prenatals and started taking Geritol Complete + folic acid. The Geritol was recommended to me by a number of different women on pregnancy sites, and when I bought it and compared it with the prenatals I was taking, it definitely had much more in it than the prenatals. Some women say there's a baby at the bottom of every bottle.

By all means take vitamins with folic. By law, the average diet has your daily needs of folate, especially in whole wheat bread and cereal (read the labels). "Total" cereal has the daily requirements in a single serving. Good luck!
