For most women the first sign of pregnancy is a missed period. The abortion pill or medical abortion is most effective up to 7 weeks after becoming pregnant. It ends pregnancy. It's 95%- 97% effective. Abortion pill is a misnomer because you actually have to take several pills. Several doctors’ appointments are required. The first appointment, before the procedure takes place, is to ensure that you understand the procedure and a__sociated risks. A pregnancy test will be performed to confirm that you are actually pregnant. The final visit is to ensure the pregnancy has ended. Some women experience light bleeding like spotting towards the end of a menstrual period. Others have heavier bleeding like their regular menstrual period, or like a heavy period. Some women do not experience any bleeding until the second visit when misoprostol is given. Cramping, bleeding, and clotting may begin as soon as 20 minutes after this. Within the next 6 to 8 hours, most women will miscarry. Cramping may come in waves with increasing and decreasing intensity. You can expect bleeding heavier than a menstrual period with large clots. During this time, you will pa__s the embryo although you may not see it since it is very small. Since each woman is different the amount of bleeding will vary form woman to woman. Bleeding and spotting can last for about nine to sixteen days. Heavy bleeding is possible, but extremely rare. In about one of every 100 women the bleeding becomes heavy enough to require a surgical procedure to stop it. In extremely rare cases, the medications do not work and the embryo continues to grow. In these cases, a surgical abortion must be done complete the abortion. Deciding to continue the pregnancy to term is not an option after taking the first medication because the medications can cause birth defects in the pregnancy.

The morning after pill is most effective when taken up 72 hours after unprotected s_x. This is also know as emergency contraception and should not be viewed as a contraceptive used instead of condoms and birth control pills. Also there is the morning after pill, which is most effective when taken up to 72 hours after unprotected s_x. It does not end pregnancy, instead it prevents you from becoming pregnant. If taken while pregnant it can cause birth defects. Its effectiveness is about the same as the abortion pill. Costs vary depending on where you live.

BC, Quebec and Saskatchewan all have PLAN B available over the counter "after consultation with the pharmacist". That may have been extended to the entire country after legislation proposed in April 2004. If you need PLAN B right now, I would suggest going to the local pharmacy and ask what you have to do to get it. The cost is about the same as a month of BC pills. The sooner after failed contraception you take PLAN B, the more effective it is likely to be. Good luck!
