Okay I went in for my 35 week check and I got my GPS test and my first internal. Didnt hurt at all, but was sorta uncomfortable because I had to pee, lol. I was 50% effaced (not sure if that is normal or not) and no dialation yet. Just curious what others were at thier first internal Check and how far along they were...

ashley, I had my first internal at 36 weeks when I got my GBS test and I was not effaced or dilated. At 37-1 cm dilated and they didn't say anything about effacement. 38 weeks-2 cm 60% eff. which made me think whoa!, this is gonna happen soon! I had my 39 week appt. this past Wed. and i was still 2cm, 70% eff. Now here I am 5 days until my due date and I'm still waiting. I think because it is my first it will be either close to my due date (6/29) or even late...even though I've made such progress! Good luck to you!

Lorikap-I am scheduled to be induced July 16. So I know I will have this baby by then (10 days before my due date) I just am really hoping I am "ready" At least I know i'll at least be 50% effaced, lol. I just don't want to force the kid out. I told the doc if I wasn't dialated and effaced any I wanted to wait. She agreed. I just didn't know when woman usually start effacing and dialating. I guess thats good that I am effacing already.

hey ashley (my name is ashley too!) i'm 40 weeks, 5 days pregnant. i had my first internal at 36 weeks. I was 0 dilated and 25% effaced. At 40 weeks (monday) I had another exam and was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. Then friday (yesterday) i was 2 cm dilated and 90% effaced. I am scheduled for induction on monday (only 2 days away!! well..technically 1..since its 7:30 pm saturday! yyaayy!!) so im pretty exited!

this is my second child, so I am not sure if that makes a difference in effacing/dialating. She at first said your cervix is "soft" then she said you are 50% effaced and your cervix is still closed. I said 50% effaced? She said yes thats normal for a woman who has had a baby before, so I said "so I have been like this all along?" she said no you are a woman preparing for labor. So I a__sume I am not always 50% effaced. I did get an internal at 32 weeks and she had said "your cervix is closed and 2 inches long" don't know what that means either. I guess ultimately what I am getting at is I am making progress and starting to prepare right? From what I keep reading you must start effacing and then dialating? I have another appointment next thursday gain. I see a different doctor because mine is on vacation. I don't know if he'll check me or not. I'll be 36 weeks and I'll see if there is any change or if he says the same thing. I just have a feeling because I have a scheduled induction I wont make it to it! lol.

I had my first internal this week at 36 weeks and I am 2 cm dilated (she didn´t say anything about effacement). This is my first baby ... I have been having a ton of braxton hicks as well as menstrual like cramps for the past week or so. She said my baby is very low - she had to move his little head in order to properly do the internal!! Wasn´t a pleasant feeling!

inny-My baby is very low too. She said she could feel his head down there and made it hard to check the cervix. I have had BH contractions since 14 weeks along and recently in the last week or so I started getting the menstral type cramps, so you give me hope that i may be doing something! thanks so much.

at 36 weeks I was 50% effaced, 1 centimeter dialated and baby was -1...at 37 weeks the only thing that had changed what how baby was engaged...now at 0. So frusterating! Doesn't mean a thing! one girl friend of mine walked around 5 CENTIMETERS dialated for 3 weeks! Talk about frustration!!!

thanks for your responses. I just don't want to be induced not progressed at all. The doctor and I agreed that if I was not dialated/effaced then we wouldn't proceed with the induction because my body wasn't ready.. Thats why I am curious to see how you ladies are progressing.

Unfortunately, being dilated or effaced when you get your internals doesn't really mean much. People can walk around 3cm dilated and 90% effaced for weeks before they give birth and have long labors, and others can have no dilation or effacement leading up to labor and then dilate 10 cm in 3 hours. So, even though it makes you feel like you are making progress, there is no real telling when you will go into labor and how long it will last. Some doctors won't even do internals for that reason.

Deb-I'm being induced July 16th, so I at least want to be doing something when that time comes. If I am 90% effaced and 3 cm dilated i'll be very happy when it comes time to be induced. I was stuck at 3cm for several hours when in labor with my daughter.
