Amniocentesis Anyone

I am almost 38 wks pregnant with #4. I am border line gestational diabetic with extremely controlled sugars by diet alone. My baby is huge measuring in the 97th percentile in weight/measures 8lbs at 37 wks w days. My doc's are planning on inducing labor at 38 wks but want me to go thru an amnio to make sure the lungs are fully developped or wait until 39wks to be induced without an amnio but risk having a C-Section because the baby may be 9 1/2 + lbs by then. I am opting for the amnio. Has anyone had one in late pregnancy and how painful was it? Any complications? I am very nervous about having this done. Pls advise. Thanks!

I am 34 wks. I have already had an amnio. It was at 20 wks, so not in the 3rd trimester. Sorry, can't help you there, but I can tell you it wasn't horrible or the most painful thing. It was mostly like a really strong crampy feeling and afterwards I was just a little sore. I took a nap when I got home and the next day I was fine and you couldn't even tell I had it done. The best advice I can give you is RELAX when they are doing it because tensing up is what causes the pain. Don't worry girl, if you can stand a shot, you can stand this! And especially 3 labor and deliveries already...you go girl! Good luck!
