Any Tips On Naturally Inducing Labor

Hey, Does anyone have any good tips on naturally inducing labor? I've read a lot of different things online but thought I would see if anyone has actually tried something that has proven to be effective. I am sick of this waiting. I went to doc almost 2 weeks ago and was only dilated 1 cent. (which was fine because it was too soon) and today I called because I was having backache, cramps and loose bowels movements (going on now for 4 days) and they said to come right in (like it was a big deal). Anyway, I got all excited for nothing because when she checked me I was only just below 2 cent. She said I was over 1 but not quit 2. The pain I am feeling is real and I don't know how much longer I can work with this pain but at the same time I cannot afford to take my leave before she gets here as I want to spend all my time with her. I'm going walking this afternoon to hopefully speed things up. I've tried s_x and Evening Primrose Oil. I'm only 37 weeks but I've never carried one past 37 weeks so this is all new to me. I had a mid wife with my oldest daughter and I'm a very small built person so she suggested at 36 1/2 weeks to start taking Blue Cohosh to hopefully get things started so I don't have a big baby. I was not dilated or anything and three days after taking it I had my daughter. Worked like a charm. Well, that was 9 years ago and now I hear so much contraversy over the herb I'm scared to take it. Any other suggestions?

I've been trying the spicy food, lots of walking and s_x route, but so far I've had no progress whatsoever (no dilation, effacement, etc). I'm 39 weeks, so technically I might be rushing it a bit, but I have absolutely no hints that labour might be around the corner! However, these methods seem to have made it to Old Wives Tale status, so they must have worked for someone at some time!

Maybe I'm being too impatient but like I said I've never carried one past 37 weeks. Oldest daughter can at 37 weeks (with help of herb). Youngest at 35 (on her on). Never had any problems. If it were not for the pain I wouldn't even care but the back ache is almost unbearable. I never had backache with my girls. I'm just praying I do not have back labor as I like to do things naturally. My doc could not give me anything for the pain because she said it might slow up my progress (how very little I have). She also told me to relax and that tension works against labor. Easier said than done but I'm trying.

I seen on another forum where a lady said she drank alot of pineapple juice and started having contractions. She said she drank a whole can by herself in a short amount of time then a few hrs later started having contractions, you can try that if you want.

jldaniels - January 23

Tried that. Not a whole can though. lol. I think I would get sick but I did eat a whole can of the chuncked pinapples for breakfast. Nothing. Not even a braxton hicks. I drink pinapple juice with my meals but like I said a whole can would probably make me sick. Going walking in 15 minutes (vigerously, I might add). Will let everyone know how its goes. I can't beleive I'm sayong this but I've even considered the Caster Oil. My mom used it with us and she said it worked everytime. Of course she was at least 39 weeks when she did it.

you can try everything in the book and it will only work if your body is ready for it... I mean you can try s_x, walking, castor oil, raspberry leaf tea...but nothing is guarenteed....also, the pineapple thing, has to be fresh pineapple and its like 2 whole pineapples a day...canned pineapple won't cut it.

Well, I walked yesterday. I feel a lot more pressure than I did so maybe it did something. Guess I won't know yet. No contractions though. I keep wishing I would see something to let me know things are progressing. Like a bloody show, or loss of mucous plug (I saw some real mucousy discharge about a week in a half ago, kinda snot like, but it wasn't much so I don't know if it was it or not), something to get excited over. Both my girls labors started in the early morning so every morning I wake up thinking "Today is the day" and I go to the bathroom and....nothing. I'm trying so hard to be patient but its not easy to do. It doesn't make it any easier either when people are like "You still haven't had that baby?". haha Oh Well, Glad I have people on here as a support group.

I've never heard of pineapple starting labor. How does that work (just curious)?

jldaniels - January 24

I wish I had kown about the fresh pinapple thing before eating two cans. lol. KatieB, to answer your question pinapple has something in it (the same ingrediant that is in meat tenderizer, so I've heard) that is supposed to help start contractions and ripen cervix. I do beleive some of the things I have done has worked though because when I was in the first time and told I was dilated 1 cent. she said my cervix was still thick and at my last visit she said my cervix was tinned out.

To induce--- I would NEVER use caster oil because it can cause the baby to have a BM in utero- then you might have to deal with miconium :o( An alternative that I have read/heard and seen people do (and work)...pump your b___sts. It releases the prolactin and oxcytocin hormones which are natural stimulants for contractions. It takes a few days and you need to pump a few times a day-- but the closer you are to labor, the faster it can work. I have a friend who "induced" both of her daughters this way- worked nicely for both. Of course- I would also speak to my dr. before trying anything. GL to you all!

I also agree with Tammy-- if the baby isn't ready...it's going to be a long road. Not trying to be negative...just the way nature has designed the plan. :o)

The enzyme in fresh pineapple is the same as that in sperm, and the gel they use to induce you, it promotes thinning of the cervix. The canning process destroys it, so it is fresh pineapple only! I ate a couple of slices of fresh pineapple & had 3 cups of rasberry leaf tea everyday for about 4 days before going into labour, both suggested by my midwife. Nipple stimulation does also work apparently, but you need to do it for like 3 hours! Ouch! If you have a co-operative doctor you could ask for a membrane sweep. This is an internal where the doc peels back the membranes at the top of the cervix to stimulate labour (I found it painless, not everyone does). 1 in 7 women who have this done go into labour within 48 hours. I started contractions about 10 hours after having a second membrane sweep done (I was also drinking the tea etc). But I was 10 days overdue, so it could have happened anyway!

Thanks everybody. I don't even care today. In fact if I went into labor today I don't think I could handle it as I am very sick. Sore throat so bad I can't even swallow. Just want to lie down and sleep for a very long time. Me and DH had s_x this morning (this was before I started feeling so bad) and it was just normal s_x. He wasn't rough or anything but I've been ina lot of pain ever since. Not contractions though just downright pain in my pelvic area and my thighs. Feels like someone took their fist and beat me down there. I'm very sore now and could not even think of pushing a baby out feeling like that. This is not the first time we have had with me being this far along so I don't know what the deal is. Jamie

to mamagoose my family the native american women were forced to tke blue cohosh at a certain stage in they're pregnancy so they could bare there child and get back to work. You should try that! Natural health food store.

Amanda janiak - January 25

what herb did you take to induce labor at 37 weeks?

Amanda janiak - January 25

nothing else really works havinng your membranes stripped really doesn't work either so I think you just need to hang on and wakit until the baby is ready to come out. this is kinda gross but you said that your bottom hurt after having s_x go get a smaller and loner d____o and have your husband stimulate your bottom pushing it up against your cervix until it hurts then stop and 10-20 minutes later do it again you should feel some pressure once you start to feel pressure do it every 10 minutes or so the more you do it the faster your contractions will work after I did that 2 times my contractions were 5 minutes apart. good luck.

Amanda, I used Blue Cohosh with my first baby. After going to the doctor they told me my cervix was tightly closed and that I would probably go to full term. I was miserable and I had to go by the healthfood store any way to get my prenatals so when I was there I was talking to a lady who specializes in herbs and she gave me some info to read about the blue cohosh. This was 10 years ago and I bought it and started using it instantly. Had my daughter in three days. I have heard some contraversy over the herb since then and have not tried it in this pregnancy. This has been a very bad day. Now other than being sick and achy from s_x I thought my water broke earlier. I felt really wet down below and went to the bathroom and my panties were soaked. I smelled to make sure it was not urine and it wasn't but I put a pad on and haven't seen anything since then so I'm guessing it might just be the rest of the sperm from having s_x this morning. I don't know what else it could be. Its to cold for me to be sweating and I've never sweat like that before anyway. I wish I could just take my mind off of having this baby. Nothing works and I need to face that. She'll come when she is ready no matter how miserable I am. Like I said though, I would hate to be in labor today anyway with me being sick.
