Anybody Have An Unexplained Elevated AFP I M Worried Sick

After I had my AFP test, it came back positive (elevated) for neural tube defects 1:31. Of course I freaked out and had 2 level II ultrasounds as well as 4 more regular ultrasounds since then, all showing that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my baby. I was relieved until I was told today that I need to start coming in 2-3 times a week for non-stress tests because people who have an elevated AFP test but no defect have a 40% chance of having something else go wrong during the third trimester, including preeclampsia, placental abruption, and stillbirth. I guess if they can't find a reason for the high levels, it indicates that something is going to go wrong with the placenta, sometimes with fatal outcomes. Has anyone else had this happen? I thought my worrying was over, but now I'm more scared than ever of losing my son. Has anyone had an unexplainable AFP and have no pregnancy complications?? I'm freaking out here.....

Allie, sorry I don't have a clue about your exact situation. I had to have non-stress tests and a neonatal specialist in delivery because my ob swore my son was too little (5 lbs while overdue) and stressed and wouldn't do well. He was born 7.6 and scored 8 and 9 on his apgar. The ultrasound results sound excellent! I totally understand your freaking, but try not to get too upset. Easier said than done, I know. I'm surprised they didn't re-do the afp. I've known a couple people who scored positive on afp and had another come back fine. I just wanted to let you know that you and baby are in my thoughts and prayers.
