Anyone Heard Of Or Had The Perineal Block

I saw on Birth Day (show on Discovery Health) that there was one mother-to-be who was completely against the epidural but demanded a perineal block which they basically inject into the perineum right before you give birth and it numbs the perineum and the surrounding area. I think it sounds nice if you decide to try to go natural or go too late for an epi but man it looked like it hurt a lot! That lady shrieked so loud when they gave it to her!

Just my opinion but the final pushing stage is not the worst. Also, one can't claim they went natural with a perineal block. Natural is natural period no interferences. But I guess for the person who tries and can't pull through it would be a great back up.

It sounds interesting, but remember your hospital of choice might not offer all options. (Mine couldn't do walking epidural due to the shortage of anaesthesiologist in Canada/at our hospital), nor laughing gas (lack of ventilation system for it).

I had one with my first and I would not recommend it. I had a epidural, and it didn't work the greatest. I ended up with two second degree tears and when I told my OB that I could feel TOO MUCH! He did the block. It hurt and I was partly numb. I can't imagine what it would have felt like if I hadn't had the epidural first. the epidural was no big deal at all. Just a pinch and a slight burn, then you feel like a mild electrical zap down one leg. It really didn't hurt at all. After the anesthesiologist had it placed I made him hug me. He seemed to be a very quiet man and was surprised, but I had been so worried about it that when it didn't hurt I was so thankful. I will definitely be getting another epidural this time too.
