Can Someone Explain

Well, I am 38 weeks and went to the doc today. He said I am 4 cm dialted, 90% efaced and at a -1 station. Then he said that he streached me? What does this all mean? Will I soon be holding my bundle of joy in my arms?

no offensew, but why didnt you ask your doctor all this? you should be asking the dr, not internet if you really have no idea what any of that means. thats serious stuff that you should know and your dr should have explained. u need to prepare for childbirth by communicating with your dr better. Truthfully, I dont understand why he even sent you home- sounds like youre ready to deliver! Im confused... Good luck!!

Well, the reason I did not ask the doc is because, when I first got preg. I did not have insurance so I have to go to a prenatal clinic. The doc is only there one day a week and has to see all the patients in that one day. So, I really only get to see him for less than 2 min, i know I should have asked him but I always feel like I am bothering him.

do u have insurance now? seeing a doc for 2 minutes when youre that close to delivery is not good. they need to take time for you when youre ready to deliver, which you appear close to. who will deliver the baby- you must have some type of coverage or medicaid or something for your delivery, right? anyway, what he was saying was that your cervix is getting ready to deliver your baby- effaced and dialated means its shortening and thinning out so it can open over the babys head while -1 station means your babys head is engaged in the cervix and getting ready to be born. are you having contractions, has your water broken? what is your plan- you seem awfully close to delivery and yet havent had a good conversation with any doctor, thats so sad!!

Good God leave her be. Let someone else give her advice if you're gonna be rude. Sorry Danielle I dont know what all that means either. All I know is you can only dilate to 10 cm which means you're halfway there and the effacement is like she said above...thinning of your cervix I believe.

Jennifer, I was not rude. Try not to be so judgemental yourself! It is sad in todays society that she cant get proper medical care. thats not rude, its true. she needs to have some kind of help, internet isnt gonna cut it. we arent trained professionals here and we arent gonna be with her at the birth. she needs to have a chat with a real live physician, and fast. Thats not rude, its true, and if you think that shes gonna get all her answers on internet, youre the one who's de lusional and doesnt have her best interests in mind!

You're such a goober; dont get yourself so worked up over someone's comments and opinions on the internet.

Unlike some other people I will just try and respond to your question the best I can without criticism. It sounds like to me that you are extremely close to delivery. I am 37 weeks and only 25% efaced and 1cm dilated. The doctor told me he would stir me up (stretcth me and such) on my next visit. I know how hard it is to try and get a straight answer from your doctor sometimes, his office can be so busy. This is my third pregnancy and with my first two, it took me forever to dialate to 4cm but I went from 4 to 10 in 30 minutes both times. Good luck to you.

Thank you all for all your help. I guess I should try to get a little more out of my doc next week. BUt hopefully, I will have her before my next week apt!

good luck, Danielle, and remember the doctor has to help you, regardless of your income or anything. make sure you tell them what you need and if theres anything u dont understand. thats their job, to be sure you and the baby are healthy!
