Can You Check If You Are Dialating Yourself

I was wondering if you can check to see if your cervix is dialating without having to go to the docs. I have been having stabbing pains in the va___a and i read on the net it could be your cervix dialating. Just wondered if anyone knows and how to be certain of these checks. I am only 31 weeks so should it be happening this early anyway.

i have been told that if you stand up with your legs well apart and insert 2 fingers in to the v____a, you should feel around the back end of the cervix and if you can fit 1 finger in a hole you are 1cm dilated and so on. But it is not a good idea to do this as you can risk infection to yourself and the baby. if you do not feel a hole you are tightly closed and labour is not iminent, hope this helps.
