Charlie Horses

My whole life ive never really had a charlie horse, well three nights ago i recieved the pleasure of getting the the most horrible charlie horse I could imagine.I woke up and started to feel it tighten, then Stupid me thought it would be smart to stretch it out...WRONG!! It went into a full blown charlie horse and I ended up screaming for about 5 minutes. I had another one two nights later. Does anyone have any suggestions as to make them less intense when they do come? Or does anyone else get the pleasure of getting the great charlie horse? I know it can mean that i am dehydrated so Ive been drinking enough water for an entire city.

I jump out of bed and put pressure on my leg till it goes away. I have tired eating more bananas and drinking more milk and i drink about a gallon of water a day, nothing seems to help. I have had some bad ones to where my leg is so tight i limp for days after. Sorry i really dont have much advice to give.

I was told to stand up, putting your foot on the floor flat. I a__sume your charlie horse was in your calf! It definately works, but then as soon as you get back in bed, I find it comes back!

haha yeah its always in my calf. I guess ill just have to suck it up! lol. I just wanted to make sure i wasnt the only one.

I get these ALL THE TIME! I find too that if I get up right away (sometimes hard because I'm half asleep!) it tends to go away, but I too have had some bad ones where my leg will be sore for a few days after....ahhhh the joys!

I was awoken with an awful charlie horse the other day. I was screaming too! I was completely paralyzed for like 5 minutes. My mom said to stand up next time and stand flat on a cold floor. I seriously don't think i could have gotten up if my life depended on it, though. In fact, my alarm clock started going off across the room and i couldn't shut it off for at least 5 minutes!

It totally feels like you wouldn't be able to stand, but I find that as soon as I did it really does work!!!!

A shortage of calcium and pota__sium are often the cause of leg cramps during pregnancy. Take more Calcium and eat a banana or something else that is high in pota__sium before you go to bed. As the others mentioned standing or pulling you foot upward also often helps.

I've read that magnesium shortage can also be another cause. I'm taking a magesium/calcium and zinc supplement from Trader Joe's. Also, I've read not to point your toes downward during the cramping - instead flex your feet and point them up. I tried it last night and it seemed to stop the charley horse.

The nurse at our prenatal cla__s said eating almonds regularly will help to prevent these more than anything else, even bananas!

Humm, you b___h and moan about babyonboard talking about her issues, and she's not been screaming in pain like a baby. Truly don't be the pot calling the kettle my dear. BTW, eat bannanas like the other ladies said and just deal with the pains of pregnancy, which I beleive were your and your lovey counterparts words.

Wow why are we being so mean towards each other ladies? isnt that the point of this thread to be able to vent with women going through the same ailments as we are, that can sympathize with us??

Steph - March 20

Kristin11, I wasn't necessarily trying to be mean, but I'm so sick and tired of this Faye chick and another girl being so hateful and nasty to babyonboard16. Calling her fat, lazy, and telling HER not to complain about her ailments...but it's okay of THEY do? Just irritates me, that's all. :o) Anyways, Kristin, looks like you've got about 3 more weeks? I hope that you have an easy delivery!!

Faye84 - March 20

Steph yes I can b___h and moan about her because alls she does is COMPLAIN. Ive never had a charlie horse and didnt know how common they were which is why I asked about it if you were to actually READ what i posted. And unlike her I dont complain about something everyday. So next time you try to bash me look a little bit more into what your saying.

Kristin11 - March 20

Thanks Steph I hope to have a easy delivery. How long do you have left?

Faye84 - March 20

Steph Ive Never ONCE called anyone fat. NEVER. so dont go putting words in my mouth everyone that knows me on here knows i would never say anything like that. Before you start bashing "us" go look in the teen pregnancy site and see how she acts in there....
