I was watching the discovery channel or something a while back and on the bottle of PICTOCIN it has really big DO NOT TAKE WHILE PREGNANT. It shows a full term mother standing there with a circle and a slash through the circle! I kept this in the back of my head and while reading a post last night I saw a lot of woman using this! Thats when I thought I should investigate so thats exactly what I did! I finally found this web site and actually its really pretty cool! You can look up any drug that you are interested in or curious and/ or causious (sp). www.safefetus.com

You do understand that pitocin is sometimes administered during labor by doctors/midwives to bring contractions on a little quicker and stronger. Pitocin is similar to oxytocin (which our bodies naturally produce during labor) I don't believe women are taking this themselves, they're given it during labor if it's not progressing fast enough. Some women say it makes contractions hurt worse than when they come on naturally. But that is a great website, thanks!

You are right and I think the oxytocin is generic for pictocin. But thats what this channel had said is that these hospitals are using it and there is or was a lawsuit going on because this lady lost her baby due to taking this "pictocin" to bring on the contractions a little quicker. Nobody told her that it should NOT be given to woman who ARE pregnant! In fact its use is for something else completely and that I did not look up.

It's possible that she was allergic to pitocin, but most all hospitals/OB's do use pitocin. Obviously not in all labors, but it is used quite frequently.

Also, pitocin is usally used to induce labor. Forgot to add that in.

I found this website through the drug website you posted above, very interesting...it gives the purposes for pitocin in childbirth along with the risks. http://www.childbirth.org/articles/pit.html

Okay I am going to do some more research and look up your website as well! The last thing I want to do is to put my foot in my mouth! However the channel I watched awhile back was one that is reputable like TLC or Discovery or something I wish I knew which one! Anyways I'll be back and thanks for your info as well.....

Some are very sensitive to it and I think that's when problems arise.

I have been induced 3 of 4 times. I did not have any negative side affects. Are you all 1st time Moms? Relax, labor hurts.... but this pain you forget fast. All my 4 births were natural, no pain meds. And so will be number 5. I actually just asked my doc to induce me early!

This will be #3 for me and I have never needed to be "induced." I have never had the shot that goes into your spine either. The only thing I had was something they put into my IV. It took the edge off and I loved it so much I wanted to take some home! But I was much younger then bc my kids are now 11 and 13. I may want the epideral now so who knows :o) ... I have been looking this Pictocin and Pitocin and Oxytocin which are the same things just some are generic! They even have a couple other names to it too! I have looked everywhere that I could think of and cannot find a picture of this bottle or anything! I did find alot of literature though and it is somewhat contriversial (sp). If my Dr. suggested for me to have this I would ask to see the bottle that it comes from. AND the box! Serious I know what it looks like bc of this channel I was watching! Yes it is rare for something to happen and so the Drs love to use it but really it has never been approved for us preggos to take it! It can cause "abortion". Please let me know what you guys find anything else -good or bad-. ;o)
