GBS Question

I am GBS+ and I read this morning about this lady who was GBS+ and her baby died in utero from what she thinks was because of her Dr. stripping her membranes and spreading the infection into the baby's blood somehow. I had my cervix checked a week or so ago at L&D to see if I was dilated. She was gentle about it, but still. My cervix was closed. Could she have spread the bacteria into my uterus somehow? I know there are different risk factors. I had GBS in my urine a few weeks ago and took a course of antibiotics. Does anyone know the odds of the baby getting it before birth? That was pretty scary to read.

No, not from checking for dialation. When they strip membranes they are leaving you open to infection.. my hosp has a STRICT policy against membrane stripping for that very reason. Not just leaving you open to the GB strain.. but also any other infections. It's the same reason that you have to deliver within 24hrs of your water breaking.. makes sense to me.

I also had GBS and my doc was 100% against stripping my membranes. She was even VERY reluctant to check for dilation at 39wks. She did it only because I insisted. Any kind of "fiddling" down there may or may not introduce bacteria. I don't think the chances of introducing your baby to GBS by a dilation check is very high. But maybe hold off on them form now on though. BTW when I was checked my cervix was also closed.
