Glucose Tolerance Test Please Answer

I had my 1 hour glucose test done on Wednesday. Today (Friday) they called and said the result was 176 (norm 65-139), and I have to go for my 3-hour test next week sometime after a follow a certain diet for 2-3 days, which they are sending me a copy of. I am very nervous about this and just curious as what to expect. How does 176 compare to everyone else's test results? Is that really bad? First time mom and scared.Thank you for any advice given.

Don't worry. Did you have pasta or rice or anything that is high in carbs the day before? That's what set mine off for the hour test. I think it came back at 183. After the 3 hour, I was found well within normal range. My doc just advised me, that "next time" I get pregnant, before the gluc test, not to have anything high in carbs the day before or it'll give a "false" positive and then I'd have to do the 3 hour again. So don't worry!! Good luck

I have my glucose tolerance test on the 26th of this month.. for 3days leading up to it, i have to go on a high carb diet. so i know that will throw mine off. i will keep u posted on what happens

Don't panic. The same thing happened to me. I fialed the first tolerance test and had to return for the 3 hour test which came back normal. It is VERY common to have high levels for the first test and have everything be fine. Good luck.

Thanks you all. I have been so worried about this. To JB, I did have pizza the night before (and cheesecake the day before...turtle cheesecake at that). I am definitely not looking forward to the 3 hour, but whatever I need to do for my little man I will. Good luck Rachel on your test. Just a question though, why are you doing a high carb diet 3 days before the test?

My 1 hour came back at 179 and I failed the 3 hour test & was found to have borderline gestational diabetes. You do the high carb diet so that your liver can store up glucogens to use & your body doesn't have to produce extra insulin to metabolize the sugar drink they give you. Its not carbs that throw your test off, its the refined sugars. Eat lots of good carbs for the few days before the test- whole grains and that sort of thing. Stay away from the starchy carbs like potatoes & rice. The starchy crbs break down faster & require your body to produce more insulin than the complex carbs. & remember, even if you do have gestational diabetes, its really not that bad. I can still eat everything that I ate before, its just a matter of timing and portion control, thats all.

Thanks Lynn, that makes sense. I was really upset yesterday because so far the pregnancy has went so well and then this. I heard that the 3 hour test can make you really sick.

I also had to do the three hour test after having my levels come back too high on the one hour. I just had to fast for eight hours before the test and its the same idea as the first, only you are there longer, have to drink twice the amount of the sugar drink and have your blood drawn every hour on the hour, also you will have to give a urine sample every hour too. It's not too fun to go through, but really not that bad either, bring something to read or to do while you are waiting in the hospital. Good luck!

HI BRANDY, I TOO FAILED MY 1 HR TEST SCORE 180. I TOOK THE 3 HR TEST AFTER FOLLOWING A SPEACIAL DIET 3 DAYS PRIOR WITH NOTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT. MY 3 HR. TEST CAME BACK NORMAL. HOWEVER IT CAME BACK WITH 1 ABNORMALITIE, IF THERE IS 2 OR MORE THEN YOU'RE CONSIDERED TO HAVE GD. SO THE DOCTOR JUST SAID TO WATCH MY WEIGHT #1 ( I'D GAINED 25 POUNDS WHEN I TOOK THE TEST). SO I KNOW EXCERCISE REGULARY AND TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE EAT SUGAR FREE ANYTHING, I ALSO WATCH MY PASTA, RICE INTAKE. AND DRINK LOTS OF WATER. YOU WILL BE FINE. I WAS VERY NERVOUS AS DIABETES RUNS THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE FAMILY. GOOD LUCK :-)

To Brandy.. When my doctor booked the test.. she advised me that i must be on a high carb diet for the 3 days leading up to the test.. Now that i have read all of your posts. im worried that they will fail me, and tell me yes you have gestational diabetes.. My mum has diabetes.. and she quite often tests my blood sugar levels for me, and they are always normal, even after i have had alot of sweet things.. my results are sometimes even lower, which tells me my pancreas is working fine to produce insulin. I dont know.. I guess i will have to wait and see. And thanks :)

Hey Rachel, read the post the Lynn sent. I received the diet to follow yesterday in the mail. It is a regular diet that I have to add some carbs to. I have been looking for this kind of a diet my whole life (I get to eat what I normally do and add to it)...just kidding. I have been checking mine also throughout the pregnancy and it has been fine. I just really hope that I do not have GD. I am more nervous about the implications it has later in life.

Oh yeah, ask if you can at least have plain water after midnight & if so, drink lots of it. I was so dehydrated when I went for the 3 hour test they literally had to dig around in my arm to find veins & then ended up taking it out of my forearm area. I had bruises on my arms for about a week.

Brandy - October 16

Hey Lynn, just a quick question. Is there really anything you can do to help with the test (little tips) that you can offer. My diet says to eat regular for three days and add some additional carbs to it (which they included in the diet and I can choose from). Just curious. Thanks!

Brandy, thanks.. and lynn... could anyone tell me where i can go to get a "diet" as such.. all i got was a pamphlet saying eat extra carbs.

It's been awhile since my last appointment with my doctor, and I have my test tomorrow (first test, one hour). Am I supposed to fast before it, or do you eat normally? My test is at 9 in the morning (the drink part). Thanks!

Brandy, on my 1 hour test I was a 142. They had me do the 3 hour test as well. The first bood draws came back normal, but the last was still a couple of points too high. They just put me on a low sugar diet...no pop, sweets, etc. The three hour test is not so bad. I have very small veins, so the worse part for me was the blood draw...4 times. The 3 day diet was not very fun either. Hope everything turns out okay for you!

Thanks you all for the replies. I really appreciate the advice and words of comfort. My pregnancy has been good so far with no real problems. I go Friday for my 3 hour test. I guess we'll see. Good luck to you all.
