I have been seeing a specialist every 3 weeks throught my 2nd and 3rd trimester, I am 36 weeks now. It really depends on the degree of dialation, and from what I understand it is fairly common, actually the most common abnormality found in pregnancies, so all I can say is don't stress too much. it is likely to correct itself, or be able to be corrected by use of a catheter, surgery as a last result.

well, my baby's right kidney is very large, larger than most enlarged kidneys...the other one is completely normal luckily. I am just curious about others, and their experience with this. The doctor did say nowadays that sometimes they will leave a non-functioning kidney in, and the only time they would remove it is if it causes high blood pressure. Thanks for your help!

did your doc say that the baby might have down syndrome or that the baby might have to have surgery

they did a blood test to screen for down syndrome and spina bifida, and everything came back negative, so that was ruled out. He seems to think after watching the progression for so long, that it can be fixed with a catheter. Both of kidneys are enlarged, so they will have to do something, but there is only so much they can tell through ultrasound

how far along are you? Do you know how dialated the kidney is (centimeters) just curious----I know it is very scary

Hi Amber, don't worry - everything will be fine. I am 36 yrs old. Only two yrs ago, i came to know about my hydronephrotic kidney and that time, i had a surgery to avoid any future problem (i didn't have any kind of problem or pain though). I also have a 8 yrs old and now preg with my 2nd. My left kidney was hyd. but right one perfect. So now i have one kidney and i am doing fine.

Thanks for all the replies, I am a bit nervous...but my specialist hasn't mentioned anything about down syndrome!!! I am only 25, so I can't imagine my baby having downs syndrome, especially when I don't do drugs or alchohol. I know they've measured face, hands, etc., and everything appeared normal since they usually have smaller hands, etc. when downs syndrome is present! Anyway, the right kidney's length was 70.3 cm compared to the left which was 33.6, so quite a big difference. They didn't mention much about the catheter, but more so to just leave it in w/o surgery & hope the baby doesn't develope high blood pressure! I am just hoping everything will shrink down once he is born! I surely feel better knowing I'm not the only one with this problem & that the baby usually turns out okay! I only have maybe 5 more weeks to go!!! (I'm 34 weeks.) I can't imagine the baby with 2 enlarged kidneys!!!! Thanks again for all the support & info!
