Incompetent Short Cervix Success Stories

Went to the OB for a routine scan, and at 26 weeks, my cervix is short at 1.8. They like it to be a 3 or more. I have been put on bed rest pending the results of the FFN test. Anyone else with a short cervix in prior pregnancies got a success story??? No downers please. I'm looking for hope and positiveness here. Thanks!

My cervix has been just over 2 cm throughout my pregnancy. My OB was much more concerned with it's strength, so he checked me every week to make sure that it wasn't changing. I am 34w+5d now and the short cervix was not my only issue. If a short cervix is your only worry, I would think that you are in pretty good shape. They will probably do an u/s of your cervix every week or 2 and continue with the FFN test every 2 weeks. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks so much for your reply. I go for the FFN test tomorrow afternoon. I will keep you posted on what they say. I hope they continue to check me weekly, it would make me feel better at this point. Were you on bed rest at all?

I am on my 9th week of bed rest right now, it will be over next tuesday though. I have had all kinds of issues. This is my 4th baby and I was labeled extremely high risk from the beginning. Unless your cervix has really changed this week, I would a__sume they will give you some restrictions, maybe some light medicine, and continue doing an u/s of your cervix at each visit. The weekly u/s has been kind of fun, the tech knows me really well now so she always gives me a good long look at the baby. He is the only child I kow that has a picture of every week of developement. It has been a lot of fun to watch him change and get chubby!

Hi Tracy88. I have a success story for you.... From the begining they said my cervix maybe incompentent because of previous surgey so i was well monitored. At 23 weeks they said my cervix was still really long so they stopped monitoring me. Then at 25 weeks pregnant I had a tummy ache but no contractions. I went in to get checked and they said my cervix was really short 2.2 considering it was nearly 4 when they checked me 2 weeks ago. Then they done the FFN test and it came back positive! Everyone went in to panic mode. They gave me loads of drugs to stop any contractions coming on, steroids for the baby and kept me on bed rest in hospital . They kept saying the baby could come at anytime and i just had to do pray for extra weeks. Well i am now 38weeks!!!!!!!!! And still no signs of any contractions or baby. I left hospital after 1 week and went home on bedrest for duration of pregnancy. The checked my cervix once after that and said it was still 2.2. They said if i get any signs of labour they would check again but it wouldn't benefit anyone to keep on checking me. So right now i have no idea what stage my cervix is at but the worry of pre term labour is now over. Thank God. I am sooooo happy. So my advice to you. Start of on as much bedrest as possible. Once you get to a safer 28 weeks you are in a much better poistion than 26 weeks and so on. As time goes on the stress and worry becomes less and your bed rest doesn't have to be so strict. But still take it easy. If you do have a positive FFN. There is still a good chance that you will not go in to labour. So have faith and pray that everything will work out. And if you do go in to labour and have baby it is amazing what they can do these days. I have a friend whose baby was born at 26 weeks and she is perfectly normal. Now 18 months and walking. So Good Luck. and keep us updated.

Had the FFN done yesterday, waiting for those results. Doc says I am not dialated, so that's good. I go back this Friday and next for U/S's, and probably every week thereafter for check-ups of some sort. I am on very limited activity, meaning I can be up and about at home, but can't do laundry, etc....and can't run errands. I failed my one hour glucose, so have to go back and do the 3 hour, and my iron was a bit low, but not by much. For this Friday's U/S we opted to get the 3D done since I am 27 weeks, so hopefully that will perk me up a bit! You are so close. I wish you all the best! Wow, 9 weeks of bed rest! What did you do to help pa__s the time? I picked up some puzzle books yesterday and my MIL is bringing me a book today. I ordered a few good new releases from Netflix, got some gossip mags, etc.....what else is there? I think I'll try to go to the craft store online and pick something out to work on for the baby, like a sc___pbook or something.

Thanks soooooo much for the post SAS! It does help to hear happy endings when the worst case scenario is presented. Glad you made it to the end! Good luck with your wee-one and congratulations!!!

P.s I live in the U.K so they do things slightly different here. I am sure they will check you weekly if that's what you want.. But now I am at this stage i look back and i am glad i wasn't checked weekly. I think going up to the hosp, sitting in the waiting room each week would of been more stressful wondering what stage my cervix was at each time. Also very expsensive with parking at my hospital. Also what if my cervix has continue to shorten i would of been even more worried each time and nothing has even happened. Plus there is nothing they could do to stop it apart from bed rest which is what i was doing anyway. However if i had contactions then they would of checked me again and given me more drugs.

Got my test results back today, and I am not leaking amniotic fluid, so that's good. Still having an Ultrasound tomorrow and one next Friday. I'll keep you posted!

I have a question, what does FFN mean? and what kind of test is it that they do? Ive never heard of it...

Tracy88 - February 23

Hi Faye. FFN is Fetal Fibronectin. They noticed on an U/S that my cervix is shorter than normal, so they do the FFN test to see if fluid is leaking through the cervix, which could indicate preterm labor. All they do is swab the area up in there and send it to the lab. It's just like any other internal exam. Faye, I put your name up on our maymommies page, so if you want to post some pictures, let me know and I will help you with how to do it. My sister had to show me, so don't hesitate to ask.

Oh okay, I get it now, Ive just never heard of that. Sounds kinda scary. I hope it all turns out well for you! what were your points on the glucose test? I had my second one yesterday and I got a 137.... so close! I have a feeling they might make me do another one in a month or so. Thank you for putting my name up on their! that was SO sweet of you, Ill have to fiddle around w/ it so I can get some pics up!

My glucose came back at 160-something. I have made some adjustments to my diet already in hopes that it helps. I really don't want to fail the 3 hour. I have spoken with so many women who say that they failed the one hour but pa__sed the 3 hour. I don't know if that will be me though. At yesterday's ultrasound the tech said that my fluid is a little high, which can be an indicator of gestational diabetes, but that it wasn't too bad. My cervix has lengthened a little though, so that is good news! It went from 1.8 to 2.2. So I am to continue with bed rest since it seems to be helping. I think I am going to be checked weekly from now on.

Faye, I just saw your pictures! How cute and pretty you are!
