It depends where you live. In the Uk they dont seem to have a paticular rule, here in US its usually 36 weeks, however when i start mine next week i will be 35 w 4 days. It will probably be next appointment, but you can always request one.

My Dr starts them at 38 weeks. He believes that there is no reason to do them earlier unless there is a problem, I agree, I wouldnt want to get my hopes up hearing that I am dilated or something b/c you can be dilated weeks before giving birth. Id rather not know at all! Good luck!

The reason they usually do an internal around 36 weeks is to check for group b strep...a lot of doctors will check for dialation and effacement right away as well, but some don't

That's what happened with me; they checked me at week 36 at the same time as they did my Group B Strep swab (probably because I was already undressed), but I haven't been checked since. I guess since your dilation/effacement isn't an accurate indicator of exactly when you'll go into labour, so there isn't too much point in checking in weeks 36-39, unless you're having contractions. Fine by me! The fewer doctors I have to endure down there, the happier I am!
