Leaking Fluid Or Urine Leakage

How can you tell if you're leaking amniotic fluid versus urine?

I guess the smell. That would be the first thing. It sounds gross, but take a wiff...if it smells like pee than it is...if it doesn't then I'd call your doc.

Like fitzerin said...smell it (Gross, I know, but still...). Urine will have an amonia-type smell and amniotic fluid either has no smell or may have a slightly sweet scent. I had to do the "smell test" when my water broke with my first baby...the L&D nurses literally asked me to smell it...

I had to do the same thing when my water broke with my first (now almost 34 weeks with my 3rd). I sat down to pee and when I was done, I couldn't stop. I knew my bladder was empty, but every time I shifted I seemed to "pee" more. I had to smell it to make sure that I wasn't peeing. Sure enough my water had broken and when I stood up to grab a towel, a huge gush came down. a little over 20 hours of labor later, my doctor elected to give me a c-section based on the fact that I was still stuck at 5cm. Good luck! That's the only way (without going into L&D or contacting your doctor) to really know.
