Low Platlets Count

Hi! I'm 32 weeks pregnant and my doctor said I have a low platlets level (90). Does anyone know more about this? I'll have another blood test in two weeks.

Low Platelets means that your blood does not clot normally, or that it takes longer to clot, meaning you could bleed longer than normal. Normal is like 200,000 platelets and low is usually anything below 100,000. I actually got down to 2000 when I was a child and was hospitalized for several days.I am not sure what they do if you lost too much blood during delivery, probably just do a transfusion. I would think you would still be able to have a normal delivery though and things should go fine. I am really not sure what causes it either, I had a rare blood disorder but have since outgrown it.

I have heard of doctors not allowing a epidural due to low platelet counts. SOmething about the hole from the epi in your spine not being able to clot and leaking of spinal fluid and then spinal headaches.

At my 25 week blood tests, I was shown to have an elevated platelet count. My docotr has since been monitoring it, and it is back to normal so it isn't an issue, but I wonder what that would have emant for me during labour? Blood thinners?
